They will not work on 987 cars, they work on 996/986 models and is basically a metal bar that screws between the front seal mounting points which has what looks like a plastic seat belt buckle on it.
The baby seat from Porsche has the other end of a seat belt buckle on it which plugs in to the buckle on the metal bar.

It is slightly different in size to a standard seat belt buckle as they tried to make you buy there baby seats with the buckle already on them. So a normal seat belt end would not work.

I had a porsche baby seat and cut the buckle off and used it as a seperate item with any baby seat.

It plugs into the factory wiring which is located underneath the passenger seat and is coded onto airbag system with porsche diagnostic machine.

The airbag light flashes for 60seconds to tell you it is disabled and then the passenger airbag is deactivated.

Think various places now sell the part of buckle you need to plug into the deactivation bar, just remember to remove the buckle if there is a grown up in the seat!

My 987 had a front airbag deactivation switch accessible on the side of the dash covered by the passenger door when closed, I seem to remember. I thought it was only the 986 that needed the special buckle/bar/seat.

ETA I can't remember if it was an optional addition though.

Yes it is an option. I asked for retrofit quote - comes in around £1k!

Found one in mine when I was cleaning it and wondered why it was so complicated. Any one interested in buying it?

Price for retrofit is high because the bar fitment is labour intensive. Without the isofix bar (just the airbag switch) it is considerable cheaper!

Chaps,
Remember that the 996 vintage bar comes with slightly longer bolts, they are a silver in colour and actually come from the flywheel assembly of 993 if memory serves, such is the Heath-Robinson nature of the kit, and they cost about £20 to replace.
If you're selling bars, make sure you arrange to swap bolts as the longer bolts may be too long for a standard seat rail, the standard short bolts are certainly too short (just) for the rail + bar.

The £1k fitting is for the 986 right? Anyone know rough costs for airbag deactivation fitted to 987?

Thanks

Hi, I'm looking for a replacement for my dead one, anybody still have one for sale?

Actually after reading the posts above, can somebody please confirm the airbag light flashes for 60seconds and then goes out? On my old 986 it was about 5 flashes. If that is the case then i've been wrongly advised by the OPC in Edinburgh and don't need a new bar.

Thanks, Andrew.

The 987 deactivates via a switch. I had one in mine but it was an option. Has been discussed above that to retrofit can cost a grand.

The 986 used the bar.

HI,

Just resurrect this thread! I'm looking to fit a child seat in my 986 Boxster.

Has anyone installed any of the ebay work arounds? if so, how did it go?

Alternatively, does anyone have a deactivation bar for sale? can these be installed at home or does it need a specialist?

Thanks

Rich
