I want to get a pop up sign for the rear window of my car, which will display the current speed limit.

Recently, some local speed limits have been changed, one from 50 -> 40 and the other 40 -> 30 - both on fairly longish stretches of road.

However - I'm finding that I'm driving at the posted limit, but then I have people either making as if they're trying to overtake me, or others that simply drive 6 feet off the back bumper.

I had one tt tonight that was clearly concentrating so hard on my boot lid, that he failed to miss the huge bright sign being triggered by other motorists in front of us, stating the posted limit.

It appears to be pretty obvious that some people simply do not observe signs, and perhaps we need larger (preferably brightly illuminated electronic) signs at the entrance to the change of limit, and perhaps more regular repeaters.

Personally, I don't care if they get caught, I do however value my car, and really don't want theirs in my back seat.

So if I could pop up a sign stating the current limit, perhaps it would wake them up.*

*who am I trying to kid, they won't change...

how about instead of the speed limit having

'BACK OFF'

jump up...

that to me would get a clearer message to them as you say it's your car you are worried about as apposed to the speed limit

Yes but tailgating is a danger to both drivers, not just the one doing the tailgating (not to mention that it actually makes overtaking harder as well).

How about ignoring them?

It's not your job to police the roads.

grin and bear it...

Then downshift and leave them come NSL silly

It achieves nothing, but it does make you feel better.

I've found a good way to give tailgaters the message is to vary your speed by 1-2 mph smile

There is nowhere for them to go - I leave a 'comfort' zone of a couple of car lengths to the car in front - so all they're trying to do, is to push me up against the car in front of me.

I don't care if they pass me, and I'm quite happy for them to pass me (I'd rather be behind them than have them behind me...) but most of the time they won't pass, even when I move over to the curb (when the road is wide enough).

Indeed, it isn't my job to police the roads, and for the most part I do ignore them - but sometimes (especially some vehicles with DRLs) the lights are just a minor annoyance in my mirror.

Sadly, my current commute is entirely through built up areas, and is restricted to 30 / 40 mph.

No NSLs for me (not anymore anyway).

Good plan though smile

The over saturation of road signage for motorists is bound to reduce attention. It doesn't help that a lot of those warning signs seem to be set well below the speed limit.
More to the point, do you want vehicles dangerously close to your bumper distracted from your brake lights by pretty signs?

No - I wouldn't want them distracted from my brake lights obviously - but some follow so close, that even if they did see my brake lights, I doubt they would stop in time.

Living in France just now so I would also find a sign in the back window useful. The driving here is shocking, almost everyone likes to tailgate here.

I would never flash somebody overtaking me - always quite happy for people to pass me - but when there's no space in front of me, well what's the point?

I have pulled over in the past - however, the person passes me, only to be replaced by yet another tailgater...
