V8V coolant level ?

I would like to know what the correct coolant level is for the reservoir.
The handbook is not very specific, it just says to fill to the top.
I assume some expansion space is needed when the normal operating temperature is reached.
I have mine filled to approximately 1" from the top, does this sound correct?

I have filled the reservoir completely to the top and run the car for a few days (70 miles approximately). I checked the cold level (before starting) this morning and it is about 1/4" from the top, so this must be the correct running level. I see a pipe running into the wheel arch area, this must be to an overflow / expansion tank, although I see no way to easily access it. I assume this requires no maintenance?
