Got 40k to spend on either.

Touareg would be the altitude version with the new 8 speed 245bhp
X5 would be a 30d msport model

X5 woul be possibly a year or so older than the vw so keen to hear your thoughts?

Cheers

Out of those 2 I'd take the Touareg. Far more understated, and classier than the X5 in my opinion. No idea about reliability, or cost of either.

Range rover, not my thing... Plus it would be older than 2 years at 40k

I had a slightly smaller budget and took a long look at the Touareg but ended up with the X5 30d SE.

I didn't even get as far as driving the Touareg as I couldn't get comfortable with the driving position and there seemed to be less interior space - there is a big transmission tunnel in tbe rear which takes up legroom, the X5 is flat.

Make sure you test drive an X5 first. Sport suspension, run flats and 20" wheels make for a very rough ride.

Any reason you're not considering the Cayenne?

Touareg, simply because it looks much nicer than the X5, and because VW do a version where they replace every bit of it to make this:

We have a 56 plate Touareg. It is a truly sublime car & in my opinion, looks much better than both the X5 and RRS. With proper high / low range and diff locks, it's more than capable off-road.

Prior to the Twig,we had a L322 FFRR and I would rate the VW ahead of the RR for comfort over long distance journeys (although, our RR was an 04 plate & I haven't driven a later revision).

We drove a new Touareg around an off-road course at the Berkshire Show last weekend and the interior facelift is excellent. The only thing I was a bit taken aback by was the deletion of low range and diff locks from the standard Altitude spec (you need to specify something like the Extreme Pack to get these).

I really, really rate the Touareg and not being as "shouts" as its direct competitors is a big plus.

Got to be a diesel, cayenne is rather ugly IMO.

going to test drive the Touareg tomorrow and will take a look at the rear as I have already driven an x5.

Good choice, i might be the only one but i like the idea of these...apart from the fuel bills, i struggled to fuel my 4.8iS, the X5M would be another massive level in running costs!

I can only dream.

A colleague is on his 2nd toureg and loves it. Servicing is costly, but isn't everything. His first was the V10 5 litre tdi which was awesome but he shifted it when the miles got up as some of bits that may fail are an engine out job. Personally I'd look at the Q7 or disco.
