62 plate 220 cdi Sport estate auto mpg

Loving my car, first Mercedes and first time I've been owner No1. It's alot different from my old Focus 2.5 ST which is the last in a long line of fast fords or Golf GTI's.
Mpg 'in the book ' was never something I thought likely but actual day to day seems low. So far 28 mpg having done 350 miles or so is about average. I'm assuming once the engine loosens up it'll get better, at least that's my story as buying this car was saving me money as far as the other half is concerned ;-)
I'm not driving hard and am enjoying the good grace shown by other road users, amazing how often Im given room and let out of junctions in queues compared to ST!.... No mentalists glued to my bumper either so a much more pleasant and relaxed journey to work theses days :-)

Mine didn't really improve until about 1500-2000 miles in. The average over 8000 miles is a steady 40mpg but I do like to give it a tough time nearly all of the time and my average speed is 28mph. On a motorway run at 80-90 it will return about 50-55mpg, mines the saloon but the estate should be similar

If C, once my 2011 C220 cdi had reached 12k miles I was getting (according to OBC) no lower than 35mpg even through winter on short journeys.
My car is a 2010 E class AG, so has the 5G box. I am averaging 47mpg over 56k, consumption has improved from just over 40mpg when new.
I am assuming that if you have a 2012 car then it will have the 7G box, this should give 5-10% better than the 5G.
Obviously the type of driving and driver makes a huge difference. I tend to cruise at 60mph, live in a semi-rural area so most journeys will be 10-15 miles or usually more. The shorter journeys tend to return 40+, and even very short trips <1 don't ever tend to fall below 30mpg.
In short your mpg sounds low even for a new car, obvious things to check are tyre pressures and whether the car is trying to undertake a DPF cycle. Give it good steady run down the motorway and see what happens, if it's not returning 40+ (I'd expect nearer 50+) then something isn't quite right.

Edited to add: The OBC on my car (unusually it seems) under-reads by about 1.5mpg. Showed 52.4mpg on the last tank, mainly motorway but a fair chunk of country back lanes. Calculation showed actual mpg was 54. Most owners find the OBC over-reads, so don't rely on the computer, it's always best to check with real numbers.

I think its pretty normal to get poor economy whilst the engine is running in. I remember the business manager at my local dealer warning me that merc engines take a bit to loosen up and not to expect everything straight away.
Having said that even when new I havent seen less than 37mpg out of my 350 cdi albeit with Brabus D6S upgrade. Now on 40mpg average and get a fair bit more on a run....Im not known for driving slowly either.
To the OP, I would give it a good blast (once warm of course). Sounds like your car could benefit from an italian tune up
May also be worth checking your configuration settings. If its set to US for whatever reason, their gallons arent quite as much as ours which may explain your low readings.

Thanks, good to know, it is a 7G box. I'll be on the motorway a bit more next week so will see how it goes. I am assuming that if you have a 2012 car then it will have the 7G box, this should give 5-10% better than the 5G.

That sounds pretty good to me ;o)My current C250 CDi coupe is averaging 40mpg over 3000 miles. Mustn't get too used to it as seriously contemplating a move back to petrol power - but sticking with the C Class. Given what I'm considering it'll probably double my consumption!
