Who likes playing submarine games?
Discussion
I quite like them. I used to play 688 Attack sub years ago, but more recently have been playing Silent Hunter 3 with the Grey Wolves mod. I got SH5 a few weeks back when it was on special offer (glad I didn't pay full price - it's quite buggy) and have been gradually applying mods to it. It's a shame they never seem to polish that series very well, as they have really excellent potential. Fortunately the community is very active in fixing their shortcomings.
I loved Silent Hunter 3. Even made me read Das Boot. I don't have reliable net connection where I live in the sticks so haven't bothered with SH5 yet but if it's on my to do list.
I remember playing a full mission on SH3 with all assists off and no time compression. I wish I had the time now.

I like getting stuck into them, although I haven't played one for some time now.
First one I recall was Silent Service on my Amstrad 464 Plus. Then I had 688 Attack Sub on my MegaDrive. Years later when I got myself a PC I started playing more modern one's, pretty sure I had another modern 688 sub game, plus Silent Hunter's II/III/IV.
I haven't bothered with SH 5 yet as I've heard about how buggy it is and it used that horrid DRM.
I haven't really seen any other submarine games out there in recent years apart from the Silent Hunter ones, are there any recent games with modern subs in?

I have the 688 sommit or another, bit basic but all you need I think that mimics what happens from what I have read. Except you stay dry. But then I also like text adventures.
SH3 and wolves of the pacific are fine but SH5 was awful. The DRM killed it for me, got it from the bargain bucket in some shop, no wonder. The rest of it might have been OK.
The only problem I had with wolves of the pacific was having to take photo's in Tokyo Bay etc where you are almost guaranteed to get spotted and sunk. Interestingly just listening to an audio book by someone who served on USS Jack, James F. Calvert, called "Silent Running: My Years on a World War II Attack Submarine". A few comments scoff at the idea of going into Tokyo harbour.

So did I , mused to enjoy it, different sonar signatures and all. Another was "Red Storm Rising" . There was another I used to play as well, might still have it somewhere , cannot recall its title. All good harmless fun
There were another couple of Naval wargames I liked, Action Stations , a crude interface, but was good once you got into it. The
other was Harpoon, which had subs as part of its make up, but all other naval units as well. That was/is a serious anorak game, you had to know on the fly
the full capabilities of your units, or you were soon dead. Apparently its used a traing tool by the USN . Amazing game for sheer depth.

Janes Fleet Command was very much like that, it was pretty crap at release but the community fixed it up into a great game.

688i was the first of the Sonalyst games, then Sub Command and finished with Dangerous Waters.

It needs someone like DCS to do a sub sim. Their flight simulators are excellent and incredibly realistic so I expect they could do something pretty good.
The problem with making a sub sim-sim realistic like a flight sim is that it just wouldn't work. You have a crew of between three and five just pushing the buttons in the manoeuvring room; that's just to speed up and slow down. The control room has three or four times that number in it. Doing it on your own wouldn't work. The silent hunter games strike probably the best balance IMO.

I had the original and all the expansion disks. Used to love playing Iraq during GW1 with several regiments of nuclear armed Backfire-Bs and Foxhounds equipped with AA-12s up against those wimpy F15s (muwahahah...)

I meant in terms of attention to detail and accuracy rather than doing everything yourself at once. The skipper of a sub doesn't operate all the valves himself, so no reason you should have to in a game. No doubt that there would be those who would want to though..The silent hunter games strike probably the best balance IMO.

I wanted electrify the hull to fight off the giant squid but was told it didn't have that feature. Stupid submarine design. What kind of sub doesn't have a hull you can electrify?
