I'm about to launch into replacing my knackered steering rack.

The car is a 1987 Turbo HC, so no power steering or air bags to worry about.

Are there any snags or obvious things I need to look out for? The job looks pretty straightforward in the Service Notes.

Cheers

Pat.

It's pretty straight forward.

When removing the steering shaft U/J from the rack's input shaft, remove the pinch bolt entirely before trying to separate the bits. The bolt sides through a groove cut in the side of the shaft. Loose isn't good enough... nothing will come apart as long as the bolt is still in the bore.

When you remove the rack from the chassis, look for shim plates between them. Keep the shims separate left side to right side. Replace them just the way you found them.
