A simple question - when checking the engine oil level do you check with the cap screwed back down or dip the stick until the cap touches the neck?

Cheers

I was told by Str8six yesterday that the cap should be screwed all the way down.

I guess you should but as long as you take the difference into account I can't see that it's a problem if you don't.

I'm really struggling to check the oil on mine, it is an absolute bugger. Having a screw in dipstick just makes matters harder.

Just need to be quick about it. Unscrew the cap whilst the engine is running, turn engine off and immediately take a couple of readings.

The previous owner always took a reading whilst the engine was running. I suppose this would be ok other than the oil is probably sloshing about quite a bit.

Have the dipstick out and wiped before turning engine off. Ensure you aren't parked on a slope of course. Then turn engine off from outside the car while holding clean dipstick in other hand - insert and screw down..job done =)

why didn't TVR just build in a simple sight glass/tube?

Too expensive!
And how will you check with engine cover on?

So they only glue the dipstick on and finished.

Sight glass can get dirty also! So no proper reading!

I always read with unscrewed dipstick, no problems!
