the differance between s1 standard and 111s
Discussion
dudes
my brother has a 111s s1 and i have enjoyed the summer sitting in the passenger seat! so much so that im shortly looking to buy a standard s1.
The question is will there be much differance between the two once ive put an exhaust cat pipe and filter? if so what other mods would bridge the gap?

yes. there is. close ratio gearbox and more bhp and the nature of the vvc mean u dont have to ring its neck as much. handling is pretty much the same but for punch and speed it is very noticeable. tho if your following or being followed by one there is little in it...if that makes any sense at all.
massive difference in my opinion and I have owned both
the engine has c.150bhp (vs 118) and more torque; in such a light car this 30% increase has a big effect
I believe that the 111S has the later, wider track suspension and was reviewed by magazines at the time as less likely to put you into a hedge; from my experience, the 111S is definitely more stable but you can still lose it
the 111S accelerates reasonably briskly to about 90-110 on the road whilst the standard car runs out of puff (relatively) at 80-90; this is just my subjective impression, of course
I would sum it up that they are both brilliant little cars; a lot of what you like in your brother's 111s will exist in the standard car, just to a lesser extent!
cheers

I have followed (closely!) a standard Elise in my 111S and the difference is marginal until as is said speeds we reached on our private test facility.
General flexibility and fun is greater though as the short ratio box seems to give you more options - I would always have the 111s, and on Lotus Sports Suspension too - I am always amazed now by how high standard elises are - it doesn't look right anymore!

I have a standard s1 111s, my mate has a standard s1. been out for some drives and driven both hard - seemed nothing in it performance wise except maybe a bit in it past 80 odd...
THEN.......
I realise that my throttle has not been opening fully and I have not been getting full power.. call it foreplay into my first few months of ownership..
she feels more frisky now and eager to please since adjustment, not massive change though so was not too badly out of adjustment.
The throttle design on these cars is very poor and should be checked, awful to think she was not giving her all on demand!
Reckon the point is though - the very small price premium is not much to pay for the pros the 111s gives and all the extras, will not feel like a different league in terms of performance though.
standard 111s is perfect for me except a few tweaks eg. changed to advans first opportunity.
Don't think theyre too high, in fact for practical reasons I could not lower it and drive without worrying about speed bumps, kerbs etc...
if i had a standard one I'd want loads more bits and spend loads even stuff like window winders, comfier seats etc are nice to have.
standard is meeting a beautiful woman wanting a service.
111s is meeting the same lady but wearing sexy gear, needing a full major service and acting out your fantasies.
maybe a bit OTT but get out and drive/ buy one!

I've been driving Brooke Kensington's standard Elsie today and it's true, it totally runs out of puff at about 80.
Other differences: less torque, massive gap from 4th to 5th.
Otherwise, the same fun.
I knew that a 111S was the way to go when I had my first Elise (standard-ish) as it addressed the issues that I had with the car.
Got one and have loved it. By good chance, I do know a good one for sale though: www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=28282&s=12
cheers now

Mr Toad
Are you in brackley northampton? or scottland?
Also is the next sevice on your car a cambelt sevice?
as my brother is telling me this will cost around £700.
Also has it got full lotus history?
The pics posted are of the car when it lived at adrian blyths! is the car vgc as the pics show? how long have u been the owner?
Does she have a hardtop?
Has it been tracked?
By the way the insurance was the same as the standard s1! what a result.
