Er, unless I am missng something the sat nav will only give you directions if you actually programme it to. It's not like it knows where you are heading and chimes in with directions every journey!laugh

The voice can be muted like any other SatNav. Ignore Clarkson, it was all part of the story he was spinning

I think there's a tiny weeny bit of truth in that story.

I haven't managed to figure out how to stop navigation before reaching your programmed destination without stopping the car and shutting everything down completely - i.e. engine off, doors locked etc.

It may well be possible, but it's certainly not obvious.

Its easy to stop the Nav. All you gotta do is click on your selected destination and on the list of options select 'Stop Guidance'. I believe its something BMW may have added with a software upgrade in later 56 plates and onward.

I struggled to find out how to do this at first in my 2007 335 via the menu (not sure if this the same nav unit). If you have voice control though you can press the button & say "stop guidance" to turn it off.

When you are looking at the map, on the left hand side of the screen is a list of icons. You can get to them by pressing the iDrive to the left. Once you've done that turning it moves between the different icons.
One of them silences her (looks like a speaker), and another stops the navigation (looks like 2 dots with an arrow between them).

There are a few others, many of the functions I can't remember right now, but worth playing with. One of them is how you get it to automatically recalculate the route when you go a different way than she'd like.

It really annoyed me when we went to Woburn Safari park. Whilst at first sight an M5 Touring might not be the first choice car for that, it was fine around the "circuit" - but having put "Woburn" (i.e. the town / village) into the less than perfect sat nav, I was left with continual U-Turn instructions on the HUD for approx 2 hours.

I've never had the voice commands turned on since about 3 days after buying the car.

After we stopped for a picnic it was fine.

Even simpler.... just press the voice command button on your steering wheel and say "Stop guidance"

There was no way to mute the directions but this was amended in a later software version along with improved postcode searching. The mute icon is as stated above on the left hand side
