I have asked this on another forum but so far no definitive answers!
My modified cooling system has the return heater pipe going into the water pump on the block side of the pump not the radiator side, my heater doesn't work, so I'm guessing that it has been plumbed into the flow side not the return. I.e I have two flow pipes so no circulation
More specifically into the drivers side where there is a hole going into the block behind the pump housing.
So is this wrong and causing the heater not to work and also trapping air at the highest point behind the thermostat causing overheating?

How exactly is it modified. Is it pre serp or serp arrangement.

Some pictures might help explain better.

It started life as a serp but has evolved somewhat, the pump is serp but all the external pipe work is bespoke

As you can see, slightly modified

I wouldn't have thought it mattered for the heater. It's just a small radiator and the coolant should flow round either way. It may not be optimal though.

I would have thought if its not getting hot at all then some sort of air lock or blockage.

Any thing past the bottom hose rad side of the pump is going to be no good for the return from the heater, it sounds like the flow is just staying stagnent because of this.

Bingo that's what I was thinking, cheers Simon

wink I can only assume this Pre/Serp plumbed engine as had the later Serp cover fitted and the solution to the heater return hose as been rectified as this picture courtesy of Dave/Spend wink obviously not the same config as you have but you get the idea biggrin

That's how it was plumbed originally it now goes straight into here

My thoughts are if its on the pumping side of the water pump not the sucking side then it will have positive pressure equality to that of the feed pipe off the thermostat housing creating no flow

I can see absolutely no reason that you would ever want to use that location for anything never mind to do with the heater. THAT point is cold water from the pump being pushed into the block, all it can ever do is defeat cooling unless you wish to cool somewhere else more than the engine?

Is this something your 'experts' have done?

Hi Dave.
The position was moved from your suggested location, I don't know why, but I haven't had the heater working, and before I strip the matrix out I thought I would look at all other possible reasons first
