Slightly OT but are Daihatsu Terios any good? I've been offered one cheap, thought it might be a bit of fun this winter.

I was worried I'd be in for a flaming actually!

Just wanted something cheap, robust and reliable with 'proper' 4WD and easy for home maintenance.

It sits quite nicely at 65 too.

My missus has an ignis for equine related activities. Its good at what it does, but it's only a part-time 4wd setup, unlike the jimny.

I'm told you can put the Jimny into rwd mode. True? (not that the power would let you drift it unless it was icy or something)

They share some underpinnings iirc, both being subsidiaries of Toyota I think.

The Terios has the VVT-i engine from the Yaris, a cracking little unit.

Mate has a 57 plate jimny, loves it to death, was great in the winter as he lives rurally.

He did say the underside didnt seem well sealed so spent a bit of time giving it some extra rust protection underneath.

It's normally RWD until you want 4WD, then you can select it up to 60mph. You need to stop completely to select 4WD (LOW) though. It doesn't have a centre diff, so using 4WD on dry tarmac can damage the little thing

Yeah, the chassis is fine on mine, but I've got a gallon of Waxoyl in the garage to apply if I get a spare few hours. Crappy job.

They are fantastic off road. My big idea is to tow a RR Sport (on 20 inch Kahn alloys) out of the snow with its low range proper box.
