Ford Escort mk1/2

Hi I'm currently living out in Thailand and am weighing up my car options and am considering an old Ford Escort.
Please forgive me but I am doing this on my phone. Exchange rate is 50 baht to the pound and Google translator helps.

The first Escort , is a MK 1 so not manufactured in 1978 !! The MK2 came out in 1974 . First one looks in good nick for age but all these cars will be bitsa's see non original engine .

see Capri ( 1977 ) section cheaper at 500 quid , its a MK1 pre facelift so probably 1969 -1972 with mk3 bumpers , front seats , non standard rear lights

A two door RHD Mk1 Escort for £1250, even with a Nissan engine, looks spectacular value given what they are fetching in the UK now. I wonder how much it would cost to ship back?

Over here they'd probably be a lot more expensive than that, they're only a bit over £1000.
I guess that as they are all 1800 that's a Nissan engine??

There wasn't a Mk1 Ghia either, 1300E was the high spec one, excluding the Mexico and RS.

Yeah the car pricing over here is strictly ludicrous. 300% import tax so something like a 350z will set you back 100k sterling brand new. They all seem to have an 1980s perspective on BMW's and Mercedes too seeing them as the ultimate success statement and far superior to say Honda engineering! Trying to tell the locals that Toyotas and Hondas are better falls on deaf ears.
I did look into buying old Fords here and not sending them whole as the export/import duty costs are sky high but stripping them and sending them that way. Still thinking about it and might actually do it. Even gone as far as viewing premises and weighing up costings for tools etc.
I am still new here but really am trying to find my way around the car industry like scrap heaps etc. Damn I had some really good photos of a 'banger car yard' here which my local friend laughed at but I nearly bought everything in sight. Proper old school Escorts, 1980's BMW 5 series, BMW 2002?, Ford Granada's, Toyota Crowns and loads of Datsuns with no names showing and which I've never seen before.
On a side note if anyone sources parts themselves out here first and then wants them shipping back to blighty I am more than willing to help. About time I put something back into PH as I have had some fabulous advice and pointers off this site which have proved very well informed.

The Escort MK1 was manufactured at Halewood UK and gremany from 1968 -1974

Australia exported Mk1's til 75 as did Israel , by this time the mk2 was very much established , so would be fair to say no mk1 made in 78 !

on the subject the Lada niva first rolled off the production line in 1977 in Samara Russia and you can still buy one today , same body shape , same interior ........and yes they only last about 60,000km before they fall to bits

OP - have you been to see any of the escorts yet? i would potentially be interested in a mk1 2 door with a solid shell as a track project. would be peanuts to get one across to dubai i reckon.
