Bringing a Classic from Southern Ireland to the UK
Discussion
Having just imported my Girlfriends 6 year old Golf - welcome to a total nightmare.
Bring Car Over via ferry (easy bit). Get specialist insurance (30 days) to cover car on Irish plates whilst process of re-registering in the UK takes place. (Assumes car is a daily driver/in usage - classic may not need?).
Convert clocks to UK spec - older Irish cars will have MPH speedo methinks.
Obtain European Homolgation document. Apply for VCA SVA. Get the aforementioned rip-off VIN based insurance.
Obtain MOT.
Then apply for UK Tax (according to band) and final registration document.
£600 and counting....
P!ss - Boil, then reduce to gentle simmer.

No one made you import the car.
The kmh speedo can stay. Just stick arrows on for the mph equivalent speeds.
You quite clearly are having a laugh - OK, I'll bite. MOT states that the vehicle dials must have premanent markings. That's a new applique (which you aren't allowed to do yourself - VCA certification states VAT receipt for work required). These sticky arrows you'd advocate, please enlighten, are they on the inside or the outside of the binnacle? The kmh speedo can stay. Just stick arrows on for the mph equivalent speeds.

And yes... if it been down to me, the car would have been sold and new one purchased in the UK. If you could get the same spec of car...
My Murena has passed several MOTs with arrows on the speedo.
In fact, the MOT test does not check the speedo at all, as far as I can see:-

It may be that the import approvals have been tightened up since the Murena was imported from Germany.

Depends on age of car. If it's over 10 years old then it's a lot easier and is excempt from SVA regs etc, just needs a UK MOT and some paper work filling in. In the process of registering a 1973 Fiat in the UK that I drove back from Italy earlier in the year - so far, pretty easy. Don't think I'd bother with a newer vehicle as the process is a lot more in-depth.In fact, the MOT test does not check the speedo at all, as far as I can see:-
