Much advice needed??

Good evening gentlemen (and any ladies who are not ironing, for some ridiculous reason! 
).
I want to take Mrs wijit and junior wijit for a night somewhere. It would have to be just one night, with a nice but family friendly restaurant and with "stuff to do" during daytime. Historic would be best, but it must be interesting. Just to complicate things, if it is off the usual tourist trail that would be ideal.
Mrs wijit likes arty stuff, but that's not a full requisite. If it is a river place, it would be good to go on a boat for few hours (either just us, or a river cruise thing). In fact, anywhere with some interest to it.
So, there we have it. Part of Mrs wijit's birthday present for you to choose!

Apologies, you're absolutely right. We are in Manchester, the destination can be near or far, just somewhere not packed with camera wielding tourists would be ideal. bristol does sound good, lots there.Thank you.
Totally off the wall but how about Amsterdam?
Fly out Saturday morning, choose a hotel somewhere south of Dam square. Boat trip in the afternoon, shopping late afternoon dinner in the evening.
Sunday morning take the missus to the Van Gogh museum for the arty farty stuff. Fly home in the afternoon / evening.
