Any experience of Mazda 6?

Looking at buying a 2010ish Mazda 6, probably the 2.0 petrol version. I keep seeing the 2.5 Sport model at similar prices and it looks fairly well equiped for the money.

What I'm wondering is does the 2.5 have the sort of thirst that would make my local petrol station very happy or are they ok? I know its not going to be doing 50mpg but would I get 35 on a long run without having to drive like a nun?

Head says buy the 2.0, heart (and PH bit of me) says get the 2.5.

Wondered if anyone here could offer opinions / advice?

The 2.5 is a nice engine, I can't remember off the top of my head what the average MPG is.. Usually if we get cars in at work I'll have a little look at the average MPG readout, just out of interest but I can't remember off the top of my head any 2.5s.

Spec level is very good on them also, very comfortable and the engine is a nice one.

FIL have a 1.8 2010 model and regularly sees well over 30 and into the 40's on a run. Very comfy and I think they have better spec than their Vauxhall counterparts. Decpreciate a fair bit more though admittedly.

Don't know anything about the 2.5 sport sorry but if it's like the smaller engined ones it should come with even more spec.

My mum had one average mpg she got was 25-30mpg great cars pretty quick and well equipped need any other help feel free to pm we had it 4 years so know a fair amount about them. All I remember is the tyres were pretty expensive but in the 4 years we had it never had a single problem.

Petrol engines in these cars are good. Diesel is to be avoided at all costs.

A fellow PH'er had lots of troubles with the diesel 6. Sorry, but I can't remember his name.

I ran a 2008 2.0 diesel Mazda6 for 3 years from new.

On the OEM tyres ran very well and handled well for a large bus.

I gave it 3 years of abuse over 50k miles and didn't have any problems.

Would recommend.

seems to suggest a real world average just over 31mpg compared to over 37 for the 2.0.

Fantastic car, offers so many luxury features even you are not expecting, I have used one in 2010 with 2.0 litres, handling is good, but consumption little bit higher then reported.

I run a 3 with the 2.0 litre engine. Real world MPG is most probably the above.

I drove a Mazda 6 2.5 Sport Tourer for about 5 weeks as a temp demo. I managed on my drive 16 mile commute of town and motorway, and the odd drive to town in the evening, 28mpg. Not setting the world on fire, but im not the lightest of chaps with my right foot!

Thanks for the advice. I'm tempted to just say something along the lines of 'to hell with fuel consumption, worrying about mpg is for girls' and just go for the 2.5.

If it'll do 30 or thereabouts then I'm happy with that.

Indeed, unless you're doing very large mileage it's not going to make that much difference to the o/all costs plus it will sound nicer and your wife will find you more attractive.

Our pool car at work is a 2.0 and although it doesn't seem to have a great deal of "go" it does seem comparatively thirsty as a run seems to get low-mid 30s (makes a reasonable noise though strangely enough).

Boot is massive and it's well equipped inside but rather plastic-ey and it might just be me but the seats are terrible over long distances. I think I'd struggle to choose one over the Mondeo.

That was me, or my brother actually. Timing chain slipped resulting a fubar engine costing him just over 3k to fix. Car was 2.2d and 3yrs and 3months old. I would say avoid at all costs as this seems to be a fairly common problem, but obviously im going to say that.

I am fully aware that it wasn't a UK problem. I thought that perhaps if the OP wasn't aware of that particular episode that he might like to be, whether or not it effects him.

My boss had an 09 from new. High mileage but he wasn't impressed. 2 services were a couple of hundred miles over the books recommended schedules, the cam chain stretched and it ate all its valves. Mazda dodged all responsibility. I'm quite sure his was diesel though.
