I do wonder how feasible it would be with modern brushless motors in actually being able to spin either a turbo or centrifugal blower fast enough to make boost. Even if it was used purely for anti lag reasons on a turbo rather than trying to use it to make boost all the time.I'll link, but I'm not entirely sure I'm allowed to...

Very and it's been done, but it requires a pretty chunky motor. With suitable gearing, something like the motor out of an electric moped could provide the grunt, but you'd need a fairly hefty alternator to drive it, although if you were only using it for lag reduction I guess you wouldn't actually need to get more than a few hundred watts from the alternator to keep the battery topped up for the small proportion of the time that you're using the motor. I wonder if it'll use the main battery or a separate system? Not an electrician, but I imagine you'd have some pretty hectic power fluctuations to deal with if you start suddenly drawing several KW of power for the charger.Edited by kambites on Monday 24th September 14:24

Lead acid accumulators are very good at dealing with massive power draws - the motor required to drive the compressor wouldn't be that much more powerful than a starter motor, which the battery is obviously capable of supplying. The question would be what the average feed-in current would need to be to guarantee that the battery wouldn't run out of power under aggressive driving. If the aim was simply to use the electric compressor to avoid lag, I suspect it'd be fine because you'd never be powering it for more than half a second at a time. Well in the literal sense yes, but the purpose is rather different from that of a normal supercharger because it sounds like the electric motor only runs when the turbo isn't providing boost, whereas a supercharger tends to run all the time. You could do something similar with a supercharger on a computer controlled clutch. ohtari said:

20Hp is about half what an M62 will need to turn it at anything like it's rated capacity (if you want more than 10Psi)
also, 16Kw is 1,333A at 12V, your typical car battery is not going to be able to make 1,333A and hold 12V or anything like that.
