Geessss.. Does that article really need a 'gallery' of photos?!

Slightly bad taste, is it not?

RIP to the driver involved. Amazes me how the health and safety lobby haven't managed to bring in speed limits on the autobahn with these sorts of examples at their disposal. Going past trucks with a 100mph+ speed differential certainly puts hairs on your chest because if he doen't check his mirrors properly before pulling out then you're dead..

Sadly, I think your wish will be true soon...

as opposed to the right solution, make people learn to drive and check their mirrors...

HGV's pull out on people 1,000's of time a day, seeming not to give a s**t about any other road users....

(I appreciate it's not all HGV drivers, but it's certainly a significant number)

Is that a high speed (no limit) autobahn? It only has two lanes.

Anyhow, damn shame, not nice, for anyone involved.

Whilst there is undoubtably some truth to your comments, as a trucker myself (and a car and van driver of my own) I can say with 100% certainty that I experience far more "pulling out without looking" from car drivers than any other type of vehicle, so let's not turn it into the usual anti-trucker witch hunt for a change eh?

Yeah, sadly road respect (which ironically is somewhat due to much safer vehicles) is on the downward cycle. I'd hate for Autobahns to be more restricted but you can't deny the risk of an 'artic' pulling out at 50 or 60mph, when you're tramping along at 3 figures.

Photo's are also freely available to view on Wrecked Exotics.

Not nice to look at - however on W/E you see the photo's first & then the explanation underneath so, sadly, you cannot avoid seeing them.

Not an advocate of looking at photo's in which people have died tbh. Just seems ghoulish to me.

It does only seem like it's a matter of time for the autobahns sadly. To be honest as much of a novelty as it is (I can't deny that I've indulged on the occasions I've been over there), in this day and age it's amazing that it's been left alone this long.

I know the numbers of unrestricted autobahns have been steadily in decline though.

Yep - plenty of de-restricted two lane stretches of autobahn.

Shame to see that.

So unless it was in extremely poor visibility or over a crest or around a tight bend - none of which are likely to be the case on an official BMW test run - this should be a charge of causing death by dangerous driving for the truck driver.

But you can pretty much guarantee it won't be.

Not directly commenting on this event or the article, more in response to some of the posts above; I wonder how many Pistonheaders would be able to safely and correctly judge the closing speed of a vehicle travelling at a differential of around 100mph in their wing mirror while operating a lorry in real life conditions.

I'd be very cautious indeed if I were travelling at such a differential over slower vehicles what with all the variables - and the severity of possible outcomes.

Lock that lorry driver up and throw away the key, not an accident as far as I'm concerned.

Non-truckers probably with some difficulty at first, but any experienced trucker should be able to judge the approximate speed easily enough after taking a few glances in the mirror - it's not rocket science.

Especially if it's a section and time when trucks are forbidden to overtake - anyone know the road?

The Germans take a dim view of poor lane changes...

You should not change lanes unless you know it is clear to do so.

It's not difficult to tell that something is closing fast if you are using your mirrors sufficiently.

It's wise to ease off approaching gaggles of trucks but it seems clear in this instance that the trucker failed to check the lane was clear...

It's not that hard, it's something club racers do all the time every weekend just for starters.
