Mine has been removed altogether so...
What does it protect? & is it strictly needed?

I don't think early cars had it, or am I mistaken?

That's my understanding too...

I was always taught that you should fuse any power source (I.e. a battery or alternator) within six inches of the positive terminal and before it has the chance to make contact with any voltage ground.

It can only protect the alternator from short circuit or reverse polarity and that is not guaranteed especially on the TVR as I have never seen it proven (wouldn't want to either) most European cars prior to 1990 never had them on the alt charging circuit (non fused) the 1st cars I ever see them on was 80's on Japanese stuff i.e Honda, Toyota etc, I can only speak from experience but every Honda that I see that had been jump started back to front had blown the main fuse thus saving the alternator wink and I saw many when I served my time at a dealership rolleyes many by Mickey Mouse recovery drivers and naff body shops laugh
