lately ive seen a few adverts for late model (1993) 964s claiming they are basically identical to the early 993 except for the bodyshell (one in Portiacraft at the moment for example quotes "THESE LATE 964s ARE BASICALLY 993s AS THEY USE ALL THE SAME MECHANICAL BITS."
I know Porsche did some restorative stuff on the later 964s ref the cylinder head leaks and flywheel problems, and revised the interior somewhat with introduction of airbags and a more modern fascia, but did they do any major revisions otherwise? how much truth is there in the claim that the "airbag" 964s are mechanically very similar to the 993? I thought the 993 had all sorts of different goodies - hydraulic tappets, revised suspension etc etc.

It's bollocks as far as I'm concerned.

The 993 had different rear suspension and a six speed gearbox for a start.

There are a host of other mods and improvements. The 993 is a large step forward from the 964, (however it may not be as much fun to drive for some people).

Although the 964 improved throughout its model year - like every car - it is like saying a late 996 is just like an early 997. And it isn't, unless talking in the widest terms.

A late 964 may be a good idea and have sorted barrels, no dual mass flywheel probs etc., but it is still a fundamentally different car from a 993 in many areas, even if late models share some parts.

Sounds like sales patter if you ask me. I'd take it with a pinch of salt. 993s drive quite differently to 964s, and feel more refined and sophsiticated (even if far less refined and sophisticated themselves than a Boxster or 996).

what utter cobblers.

My 93 964 is nothing at all like a 993, mechanically or otherwise....
