So its going to be winter for me in 24 hrs.....after a blast in Oz 
Not going to be getting to CX so instead want to buy some decent kit to keep on the road, the Aldi stuff from last year worked ok but now I know cycling isnt going to be a fad for me I want to buy stuff that works.
I have earmarked a Rapha base layer as I have killed my HH one. Looking at a pocket rocket type rain jacket to replace my worn out Crane (i think) one. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what has been good for you over the years, I read the mags but real life experiences count in my book.

my attire was simple, cheap, effective, lasted me all winter and will be coming out of the cupboard this year.
marks and spencers skiing base layer with zip neck
reflective over-vest £2 from ebay
altura tracksuit / trouser type legging things from lbs
lightweight wind / partial waterproof zip up top from lbs
berghaus wind / raincoat for the really wet and windy cold days
golfing waterproof trousers cheap as chips from ebay
gloves and ski gloves for very cold / wet days.
does me fine for an 8 mile each way commute

Rapha merino bases are good, although I reckon no better than the old style HH with stripes on the arms. Endura Baa Baa layers are warmer but don't wick so well.
Thermal socks are a must, I've got some good Endura ones.
My Endura neoprene overshoes (I don't work for them BTW!) are pretty warm but they wear were the heal rubs on the cranks and you end up with holes in them. They're good otherwise.
You'll need a skull cap
Thin liner gloves are very useful
