looking to buy a winter hack. Pal has a Daihatsu Fourtrak that i know he has ran on the red stuff in the past(farm hand). He is selling it cheap. What are the ramifications for me if i get dipped. Do i land in trouble for what the previous owner did with the car....

Can't give you a definitive answer, but probably you will have difficulty proving it wasn't you IF it still shows up.

In reality, what are the chances of getting dipped? I've lived all my life in rural areas and never once seen a roadside dipping test.

I know. But you do Hear these stories. Would not like to shell out £900 on a winter hack only to have it taken away from me.....

Would emptying the dank of red diesel, running a tank of duty paid diesel through and then changing the fuel filters not resolve the problem?

Next roadside dip-check planned near Kirknewton...

Seriosuly, I wouldn't worry. Run the tank low and refill a few times and you'll be fine.

Nothing like being innocent until proven guilty then?

Surely on a used vehicle that has white diesel in the tank the onus would be to prove the current owner had been using red diesel, not that the vehicle at some point in its past may have been run on it?

Keep all your fuel receipts in the glove box, to show history of purchasing white diesel since you bought the car?

Yes the red will taint the fuel lines, filters etc, but once you've run a couple of tanks of black through the tank it won't show up red on a dip test.

Stop fretting and get it bought.

from what I understand, those in the know will know if its running on red diesel just by the smoke coming out the exhaust. Brim it with white and you should be fine!

This is very good advice. It's not running on red they get cross about, it's avoiding the tax. If you can show a history of paying the duty, and the diesel in the tank isn't dipping red, you're going to be OK.

They dip the tank, they don't do a forensic examination of the fuel lines and filters.

My dad has had his work motors dipped on numerous occasions. As long as the diesel in the tank comes out looking alright then it'll be fine. Just need to make sure there isn't any residual in the tank itself to give it a pinky tinge.

Suggest you contact HMRC and ask the question? Many years ago I accidently filled a farm 4x4 with red (pillock I know) and we contacted HMRC, paid the duty on the red filled and then continued using the vehicle. It may be quite simple- just make sure you don't use red and keep receipts as said. As for the stain being removed after a couple of runs through with white- I wouldn't bank on it.
