Trip to Ireland in a 3.0 csl

This past weekend i decided to make the last of saummer and take the old girl on a trip to check my efforts over the last couple of years. This has included changing the head gasket, ditching power steering, 6 branch manifold, new injectors, steering and suspension, adding gauges and a radio, other general jobs that had been annoying me.
I set off on Thursday night and took the Fishguard - Rosslare ferry - the end of this journey is good fun with lots of roundabouts and steep roads.
Ferry was fine and the other side was good fun as Irish roads are a lot better than they used to be and are more interesting than in the UK as a generalisation.
I was lucky with the weather which makes or breaks a trip like this i find.
Well the car did 1100 miles in 3 days - on the run down to the ferry she returned 25mpg! I didnt have to touch anything on the car and she performed brilliantly. So much for classics not being reliable!

I was down in London staying in the Novotel in the Hammersmith area, one of the nights I was there, probably the 9th September, I heard a one of the best engine sounds I have heard in a long time, one of those you know is going to be something special and looked out of the window just in time to see a classic saloon in a yellowish/creamish colour (it was pretty dark at this time i think) accelerating onto the A4 heading eastwards.
I could only see the car for a second or two and being on the 9th floor it was a little difficult to see properly, but since that day I have been searching the internet to try to find out what car it was as I just thought it looked and sounded amazing, and I had given up all hope. Then I clicked on this thread and after seeing the rear end of your car I am sure it was your car that I had been searching for.
I cannot belive I have found it by accident.
Anyway, that is a great car you have, and as the others have been saying it is great to see it being used properly. Hope you get as much enjoyment driving it as I did seeing it!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes its good to use them and from other cars I find the memories from long trips surpass all other ownership experiences if the car is reliable!
No the car wasn't at Brands but there are a couple out and about in the UK.
Hoping to restive a European tour they did in one when they were new soon. Will try and post a link to the road test as its a good read for any car fan.

Years ago, Myself and a mate had a weeks holiday driving across Ireland in My E30 325i Sport. When we arrived and starting driving on the Irish roads we were about the fastest car on the roads, eager to get to our destination.
By the end of the holiday we were one of the slowest on the roads because the whole relaxed feeling of Ireland made us feel that there was no rush to be anywhere in particular.
As we headed back to the Rosslare ferry, we noted the English plated cars racing towards us, overtaking everything and both thought: "Give it a week mate and you won't be that bothered!"
As for the roads, the main N roads were superb, but once you were off these it was more of a gamble as to the condition of the tarmac, and on the smaller roads, I followed the locals and drove down the centre of the road because the edges of the tarmac were more holed than the battlefield of the Somme!
(I also got caught out by a couple of "home-made" cardboard road signs written in marker pen, that appeared to be guiding works traffic off the main road [it read: WORKS TRAFFIC! <---- ] . Turned out that they were actually poorly thought out "official" cardboard signs that were telling motorists that the road ahead was closed and only for works traffic to go straight on! - the tarmac just ended!

Have to say, Ireland has some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet! loved it there!
