My PC keeps running really slow for no apparent reason. It does not happen at any particular point but even when it appears to be running well the CPU useage is always 98-100%?

There is nothing in task manager that seems to be causing problems...any ideas?

Thanks

Task manager will show you which process is using the CPU, what does that say?

Explorer 67%
TaskManager 17%
Wincom.exe 8%

And that does not add up to 100?!

wincom.exe is a virus IIRC ... search for it on google and you should find instructions for deleting it

I have a similar problem with XP and the CPU slowing up. MotiveSB.exe is the one doing it, can anyone tell me what this is. Also, is there a list of minimum processes required, so that if I've 'extras' that are running and I don't need them, I can remove them.

do a search on the t'internet for minimum services, but a good start is to use msconfig to stop anything you don't want running on startup.

MotiveSB.exe is part of something called Motive Smart Bridge. It is a virtual assistant from AT&T Broadband used to communicate internet problems back to the ISP.

I do know that in the UK, Blueyonder use the same software. There may be other ISP's that also use it that I am not aware of. Apparently disabling it will cause some lack of functionality in error reporting back to the ISP.
