First time in 20yrs, but I'm pedalling again

So, I got myself a nice bike, was out in Sunday in the glorious weather & again tonight in the pissing rain.

Any hints & tips heading into winter?

I sold my last bike (a custom dyno team slammer bmx) to buy my first car & apart from a few city bike tours on holidays I haven't ridden anything at all.

I've got some basics to get me started, spare inner tube, pressure canister thingy to blow it up, good helmet & a good jersey & some gel shorts.

The bike was a bit clarty after tonight so I just hosed it down & briefly dried it off, should I be coating things in oil to stop corrosion?

Any hints of stuff I should get are more than welcome.

Pedalling, please!

Chain may still retain enough oil after a quick hose with plain water. I generally oil after a degrease when it's mucky enough to warrant.

Does that really make any difference? Brake cables are pretty strong...
