Insurance question
Discussion
Hello all,
Yesterday, my other half told me that her insurance company had taken £780 from her account. She got on the phone to them to see what was going on, and was told that a letter was sent out outlining the renewal, and if she was happy, it would renew automatically - and their price was a very competitive quote.
The trouble was, that she never received the letter - if she had, she would have been straight onto comparison sites to make sure their 'competitive quote' was indeed competitive.
So, when she found a comparable quote for £340, she called them back to see what they were playing at...
Their response was that they had done her a favour to prevent her driving round with no insurance, and as the policy started 14 days ago, she will have to cancel her policy, and pay a cancellation fee etc.
Can someone suggest how to play this, as understandably, she is not best impressed, and she does not want to be ripped off! From my perspective, the money was taken without authorisation, but I don't know much about how these things work.
Thanks
Tom

this might be better in speed plod & law
I recall something about this from EU - http://whatconsumer.co.uk/unfair-contract-terms/ suggests "Automatic contract renewals where you are not given reasonable opportunity to prevent the renewal."
personally I know by heart when my insurance is due and always go in a speak to the broker, but I have never not got a renewal info through (I have been using a long time) - it is worth putting reminder on calendar a month before to stop such things

Well I know who not to use from now on then!
Surely it's down to them to prove they sent the letter, rather than on Ems to prove she didn't receive it...
Oh well, may be one for her to chalk down to experience, with a letter to say she will NOT be renewing next year, or anytime in the future.
