Car Problem. Help!

Hi guys.
Hopefully someone can give me some advice. Tonight, on my way home at about 8.30PM, my Seicento Abarth decided that it wanted to idle at redline
. To give a brief description of what happened, I was just slowing down from about 30mph in third gear, changed into second at between 15mph and 20mph to turn into my street and suddenly, my revs climbed all the way up to redline while applying no throttle at all. I stopped the car before going any further and restarted the engine, but this did nothing to help. After trying this a couple of more times with no effect, my dad, who was a passenger at the time, and a very kind gentleman in a car behind helped push the car into my street and off the main road.
After restarting the car several times and coming up with other silly remedies which were probably never going to work, it is now idling at a normal rpm but constantly revving up to just under 2k on its own. I was able to get the car parked safely at home but there's no way I can drive it in its current state.

As the highly unqualified mechanic i am, would it not be a sticking throttle cable?
It may not even have a throttle cable, sadly.Op, you obviously know this is a serious issue ........ get it to a garage !
It could be one of many things, from something as silly as a car mat intrefering with the accel pedal, through electronic faults, to sticking mechanicals.

Thanks for the reply. I hoped at the time that it would be something as simple as the mat jamming the pedal, but unfortunately it wasn't. I'll get it checked out ASAP, but it doesn't look like I'll make it to work tomorrow. Hopefully someone has had a similar experience and may know what is likely to cause such a problem.Op, you obviously know this is a serious issue ........ get it to a garage !
