S1 Rev counter and rear window, chassis protection.
Discussion
Hi Just purchased my 1988 S1,On saturday it is in very good orginal condition with full and up to date TVR service history.I have a couple of things to sort so I am looking for some advice.
1.The plastic coating is starting flake way from the chassis.Whats the best way to protect this ?.I was going to wire brush it and apply stone chip and waxoil in body colour.
2.The rev counter does not work, last owner said it started to play and then just stopped.
Any tips where to look.
3.Rear window has small hole in one bottom corner how much to replace and where to get in done. [I live Essex East London Area ].
I was not looking to buy a TVR this one was offered to me at a price I could not refuse,But after driving it for a day I'm glad I did.

Having said that, don't be put off by the price if the insurance doesn't cover it, as there are companies who'll do it for quite a bit less than I paid.
Welcome to the S club, you wont regret it!
I am sure others that have treated the chassis will be along in a minute to let you know the best, but along the lines you are thinking is one of the ways to protect the chassis, just make sure you get all the flaky stuff off with the wire brush!!
As for the window Richard is right, check with your insurance, although you can get rear screens fitted for around £90-£100 at somewhere like A&R Pound in Baldock! Or depending on the condition of the hood, go for the rear section from Autohoods which icludes the rear screen for about £250 IIRC!

Richard, was that just the window panel or the whole rear roof section they replaced?
Welcome

I wire brushed mine, to get the loose plastic and any rust off, and then applied two coats of smooth red Hammerite. While wire brushing, don't leave any loose rust and listen for any "dead" bits, usually a sign of more extensive rust - I found a little hole in a trailing arm and had to have it repaired.
There is another paint (POR 15 I think it is) which is supposedly good as well, as a rustproofer - I used Hammerite because its colour almost exactly matches the red plastic used on my chassis as original.
I still have one or two bits to do (although they are presently coated in engine oil so rust is unlikely to be a problem!) - once I have painted the lot, I'll be applying a 75% waxoyl / 25% white spirit mix with a cheap sprayer - I was thinking of trying one of those wee bottle sprayers you get for house plants etc, or if that doesn't work, I'll try my bigger weeder/sprayer that is on its last legs anyway. I used the proper Waxoyl sprayer last time I did a car and it wasn't very good.
I do remember that you should wear old clothes, boots, gloves, a hat, facemask and goggles because Waxoyl is messy stuff and is obviously not designed to come off easily!

Autohoods has just changed hands but are still on the same website and numer as far as I know but their prices have increased slightly since the change of ownership.
Also, Autohoods price listing was misleading, if you didn't want the entire roof the price was substantially higher! You wouldn't have known this until placing an order which is a bit naughty really.
Thanks for your all your advice.Chassis now painted and given a good coat of waxoyl.Rear window is being replaced in two weeks time at A&R Pound of Baldock they Quoted me £80-100,I have found a place to repair rev counter for less than £40 if the problem can't be found in the wiring.
I am going to look at a Chimaera on Monday that a friend of a friend is about to put up for sale,
So watch this space I might be selling the S I wont have the room to keep it.
