Having been interviewing for a role in Malaysia with a new company, it seems that my employer may want us to move to Panama in a month or so!! We were all kind of set for KL, but this throws a different light on things, as my wife and i both really like Latin America, but have never been to Panama.

Does anyone know what it's like there?

To keep it PH, I did see a bright yellow new Camaro SS for sale in the classifieds (you've got to check out the important things first!) that may find its way onto our driveway over there.....

I've been. If you're going to be based in Panama City you'll find it is essentially the 51st State of the USA. Everything runs on the dollar and its full of expat yanks. America basically took over Panama as a client state when it took over the canal from the French. It doesn't exactly feel like downtown Miami but you certainly wont be short of familiar products and foods and people to talk to. There's a fair few Brits there too.

Hot sweaty ditch with mosquitos. The natives are friendly and there's a disturbing level of US food franchises, so you're never far away from Subway or MaccyD. The hats are cool but most seem to come from Ecuador, at least they did in the tat shop I visited in Colon.

You don't have to go to Panama to do that; you can get stabbed much cheaper in the UK. hehe

Thought so. I was thinking about trying to find an old lock keepers cottage and watching the canal boats pottering up and down all day; maybe stopping & having a little chat or beer whilst waiting for the sluice to fill up....

In common with british canals, everything seems to move in slow motion and there's a little narrow gauge railway that carries nothing useful and goes nowhere. hehe

erm. perhaps you're being whimsical but as far as I could see when I was on the canal the railways alongside operate as kind of tugboats. Trains pull the boats through to keep them from touching the sides, so to speak.

Kuna Yala territory is beautiful on the south east coast. Mountains in the north are fantastic too.
North eastern corner near Bocas del Torro is full of the spring break party crowd whistle - if you like that kind of thing

Darien jungle in the south is just a 'little' bit wild - insert your own drug running joke here.

You are not too far from Corcovado nat park in Costa Rica and you have the benefit of not being in Costa Rica (which is always a bonus). It is Americanised to a large extent but at least it's not Costa Rica.

As for personal safety - when people tell you don't go to Casco Viejo in Pan city listen to them!!! The second time I wandered through I got a six shooter in my face at point blank range... lesson learned. If you are going through, make sure you do it fast and fire off a couple of rounds for me

Good Golf course that runs alongside the canal. Weird seeing a big ass ship in the middle of a jungle.

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!

2nd best palindrome I know

1st is: Satan, oscilate my metallic sonatas.

The inside of my brain is a wonderful place filled with magic facts, and equal amounts of utter rubbish.

For instance, did you know that British regulations demand 20% of the frontal area of a train be painted yellow?

Why? Is it the boring logical 'because it's easily visible' answer?

A bit of digging gets the truly accurate answer. Note: not stored in my brain..

" it is a railway regulation and that various shades of yellow are permitted.
The area shall be a minimum forward facing continuous area of yellow surface of 1 m² with a minimum dimension of 0.6 m when viewed, at a large distance, head on from in front of the vehicle. It shall be permissible to divide the yellow surface by elements of an end gangway if necessary. Each section of a divided yellow surface shall have a substantially uninterrupted yellow area not less than 0.4 m², with a minimum dimension of 0.6 m."
