Audi A3 - which platform?

Which platform/s has the A3 been built on? If it first arrived in 1996, I'm guessing the same as the Mk3 Golf, but then the models change in the middle of the Golf's model cycle. When the A3 was updated in 2003 did they build it on the Mk4 chassis that late in the day? Was there a point where they changed to the Mk5/6 chassis?

First two gens (8L and 8P) were based on the VW Platform and have shared it with the likes of TT, Golf, Beetle, Toledo etc..

The new Gen A3 shares it with the Leon and Golf too but is on the newer VW MQB platform.

8L platform is same as mk4 golf, mk1 leon etc
8P is same as mk5 golf, leon mk2 etc
