If it was possible, what would happen if you went from 5th or 6th gear around 100 MPH and suddenly put you car into reverse.

What exactly would receive damage?

I'm guessing gearbox, c.v. Joints, prop shaft etc..

Can't be done I don't think. Didn't Myth Busters cover this once?

I reckon you would have to take your gearbox home in a carrier bag.

Had a mate try it in his mini once, the reverse lights came on but the gears just grind like hell and would not actually go into reverse! so as above, not sure it's possible.

The baulk ring will prevent this from happening.

If you do manage it then the engine will stall and you'll lock the rear wheels plus you'll probably lunch the gears.

I've missed 4th and gone to 2nd at about 80-90mph - felt like I'd hit a brick wall - car was Quattro so it didn't lock the wheels and the engine made a bid for freedom via over rev, dipped clutch and selected the correct gear and no damage

but have been in a another car when this happened and the over rev chucked a rod though the block.
