basically wondering if anybody knows these cars?

looking at a 2005 low mileage one tomorrow - any common issues to be aware of?

always liked them and think they are overall good cars or do people disagree?

I'm guessing this is the diesel version of the ST220?

Yes. Why bother with the noisy old diesel when you could have the V6 petrol? confused

Well I've got a straight 6 at the minute, but need a bigger car and mileage going to increase quite a lot so thought this would tick all my boxes. Plus no v6 models for sale near me at the minute.

For me, it was 40-45mpg vs low 20mpg, and the 25k+ per annum I did/do meant the V6 would have been an idiotic choice.

It's a PSA shared engine, and like nearly all modern diesels can suffer DMF, injector failure, Turbo etc, and the EGR valve should in my experience be considered a 30-40k consumable.

I owned my ST TDCI estate for about 3 years and took it from 5k at 6 months old to 92k at 4 years old. It was a great all rounder. The engine did have a bit of diesel clatter, but was fairly torquey and pulled well enough. The car handled better than a diesel repmobile estate had any right to, and was great fun on good roads. Practical thing, especially in estate form, and apart from some very slight scuffing on the drivers seat bolster, the steering wheel, pedals and seats themselves still looked like new when I traded it.

Mine suffered two EGR valves, which were approx £120 to replace (one was done under warranty FOC) and as I changed it in there was a wobbly wheel bearing, but that was all. Oh, and the Diamond cut alloys are prone to corrosion. Overall mine was very reliable.

I'd highly recommend one; I considered buying mine back when I stumbled across it on Autotrader two years after I traded it.

Thanks for the reply dimski

Good to hear positive feedback on these.

Would love an estate but can't find any for sale.

Did you keep yours standard?

Personally I think the 2.2 diesel drives very well, even if it's a bit agricultural on start-up.

Reliability does have some question marks over it and 'Honest John' and 'Diesel Bob' aren't desperately favourable towards the engine.

Have a read of ST Drivers forum as there were plenty of the soot-chuckers on there.

Yup. I've heard good things about the Bluefin remap, but I did loads of miles, including some towing and thought the strain the extra power could put on the drivetrain might be a bad idea over the years. It never felt like it was needed anyway.

In standard form, the suspension was firm but well damped, making it not too hard on the motorway but fun on twistier stuff. I think stiffer/lower stuff would be good, but might ruin the good standard compromise in return for little handling gain, at the end of the say it's still a diesel estate/saloon.

I was lucky enough to find one with half leather Recaro seats, which were standard on the ST220 but only an option on the diesel. They were superb.

Well I saw a few today and bought one

A 2005 in silver with 54k.

Picking it up on Tuesday, it's getting serviced, new discs, and back bumper painted before I get it

Seems like a good car, looking forward to it.

I keep looking at these so would be very interested to hear how you get on with it. How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

Get a thread on readers cars when you pick it up!

Only the Mk4 Mondeo had a PSA engine, the 2.2 Duratorq in the Mk3 is Ford designed and built, called the Puma officially. No-where near as nice as the PSA engine IMO, much harsher but still pulls well. Great for my Transit!

My brother bought one new, it was a 56 reg and in 3 years he put a 100k on it in 3 years, the car didn't suffer a single fault, he replaced it with an E90 which to be honest is only a tad better to drive, I can't praise them enough, however I would not buy one with massive miles and only buy a minter as Ford can be hit and miss.
