I don't want to post under Audi as I want an opinion from a wider less biased group.

Has anyone had any experience with driving/owning one?
Its coming up to replacement time for our convertible. Its primarily for her to drive. We'll be looking at one a year or two old.

I've had it in the neck about fuel consumption so Mercedes and Porsche are out. Had my heart set on a pre '06 SL55 but she would crucify me if I turned up in one.

The Audi slips nicely into affordable road tax along with decent performance and fuel economy. As it'll be mainly her toy I'm not too bothered about the VAG dullness, although, if it's that bad we won't be entertaining it.

If anyone can suggest anything interesting which is economical, no roof, interesting, girl proof etc would be appreciated. smile

My best friend used to run an R230 SL500. It was without a doubt, one of the most awesome cars I have ever seen. The TT isn't fit to hold a candle to it.

IMHO owning a TT says, "I wanted a Porsche but I couldn't afford one". How about a Nissan 350Z?

"I own a 911, which means I look down on him..."

"He owns a Boxster, which means I look up to him..."

Boxster...If you only need two seats and will only be owning one car then at the price level it has to be this. If you have another everyday Car then an Elise or TVR. Simples

Just does not compute with me, sorry. You can get an awful lot of petrol for the same amount of depreciation you'll experience, surely? Get your fruity Merc smile

LOL. I would rather a TT than porsche. Porsche is like apple to me. Owned with a desire to be seen with the latest most ridiculously overpriced tat which will be outdated within a week of buying.

This, definitely. There is a definite error logic when someone says "let's buy a middle of the range, new economical car, we need to save cash". Go for the SL. You know it makes sense. The TT will lose loads in depreciation and it will never set your heart on fire. The SL will be one of the finest motoring experiences money can buy.

Funny about the comment that Porsche are like Apple. If anything, I'd say Audi leads the 'badge pack' now. Lots of overstyled cars that are no longer best in class, but suitably appealing for people that want to say "look at me". And I've owned two Audis in the past, one TT and one old Audi. What Audi makes strikes me as far removed from their products of the 90's. Gone is the sober styling and the 'be the best at any cost' engineering. Instead, there are lots of LED lights, swoopy fake grilles and slats and TDi engines with white paint.

SLK 250CDI on one of those cheap lease deals? Weren't they £240 per month.

Its a diesel though, so if you missus is like mine she'll love it. "It goes fast without me revving it blah blah"

Which also happens to be the finest product in the market. Not everyone buys an iPhone because they're trendy (are iPhones trendy? At least 50% of people I know seem to use them, they're not all cool people) and most people accept that the Boxster is the best driver's car in its segment.

If you buy a different car/phone because you're worried about what impression it gives off, surely that makes you far more self-conscious than all the Boxster owners who just like driving the thing?

The words TT and convertible together must be the very definition of a non-enthusiast car IMO.

Yes they're very good.

But then I'm a little biased.

They're a fantastic car - beautifully styled and impecably built, you'll feel special ever time you sit into it. Brilliant 2.0T engine, 0-60 in 6.5, great sound and best of all, after a blast you'll still see it returning 40+ mpg.

Although they have a lovely steering wheel, they don't have much steering feel, so for that reason, together with general completely unjustified Audi hatred, pistonheads hate them!

Really? you think a porsche is more of a wannabe car than a TT? are you serious?

The TT clearly is more of a Ipod generation car than a porsche. Dynamically the porsches are much further ahead and the TT will always be seen as a hairdressers car.

Just my opinion of course.

Pre-2006 R230 with ABC suspension and SBC plus myriad other poorly designed parts with telephone number price tags you mean?

Absolute moneypits and I wouldn't touch another with a barge pole. Fuel consumption isn't an issue - keeping them properly and well maintained is.

Don't ask me how I know.

OP - the TT is a fine idea, nice looking car with a nice interior. Go for it - or the competition such as the SLK.

Perhaps there is deliberate irony going on here - Porsche, design wise, are one of the least revolutionary manufacturers out there. Evolution over revolution is very much their game.

Funny how their overpriced tat seem to win most class comparisons and are usually held as the benchmark in their respective classes.

I'm yet to hear anyone set the Audi TT as their dynamic and performance yardstick.

IMHO owning a Porsche says "I wanted a Veyron but I couldn't afford one".

IMHO owning a Veyron says "I wanted to develop my own supercar but couldn't afford to start up a new car company"

IMHO owning a car company....

You can buy a Porsche for TTS money, so I'm not sure what point you're really trying to make here, especially suggesting a 350z when you could have suggested a 997, Boxter S or Cayman S.

I test drove a mk1 TT V6 DSG Coupe before finally settling on a 350z roadster.

The TT was a nice enough car, but it just wasn't as alive or exciting to drive. The zed is a much more raw experience. The TT does have a nicer interior, though.
