I needed to get my Tuscan MOT'd the other day but my mechanic said it was misfiring and said it would not pass the emissions test so when we took the main bonnet off and discovered that no 1 cylinder was not working. We discovered that it was full of oil and when cleaned out started firing again. One of the other plugs also had oil around the plug. Ar the same time we noticed that the HT lead to no 1 cylinder had been trapped by one of the screws that retains the HT lead set on the top of the cam cover. The lead was perished and the wire bare so I can only assume it would have caused misfiring. I am now replacing the cam cover gasket, HT lead set and plugs while we are at it

Is this a question or are you just saying what you're doing?? If its a question then yes the broken wire will cause it to miss fire if its arcing out on the engine. Also oil in the plug isn't a good thing as it probably means your inlet valve guides are worn excessively or rings. Does it smoke? If so then it could be the rings or exhaust valve guides.

Oh and they don't usually have a gasket for the rocker cover, it's just siliconed on.

I read it as oil in the plug recess, ie the cam cover hadn't been sealed properly?

Possibly yes. It's not like you can 'slip' with the oil can when filling these up with oil is it! ha ha!

There is a an o ring seal on the top of each of the ports to stop oil leaking in, however if to much sealant is used to seal the cam cover the the cover will not seal down on the o seals, its a crap design. I have always made my own gasket seals for the cam covers, once you have the template it is simple.
