Your Daily Commute...

Hey All,

I've currently on the research stage of my latest Uni project , inwhich is to look at ways of improving a daily journey, of a persons everyday commute - whether that be walking, in a car, bus, train etc.

Im looking for peoples opinions on the subject, the aim of the project is to make a product or development of transport to make it a good commuting daily journey.

Any suggestions for 1 + 2 would be greatly appreciated. :

1. The bane of my journey to workplace / education / etc is..... (walking, bus, train, car)

2. My Daily Journey could be made better by.....

On average how long do you spend per day travelling?

2. Wider stairs and/or hallway from kitchen to office.

30 seconds (32 on a really bad day)

1. my commute is 40 miles each way, in the comfort of my own car.
2. It could be made better by getting the cretins off the road who cannot breathe without their mouths open, and spend their entire journeys in the middle lane.

1. Walking for about 40 minutes to get to the train station. Train journey itself is only around 15 minutes and then there is another 25 minute walk from the train station to uni. Far too much effort for someone as lazy as me

1) Traffic @ rush hour. Also, potholes and bumps at work and people that cannot park

2) Maybe a better laid out car park.

3) 10 minutes/ 2.9 miles.

1. The weather. If it's cold and raining i can't put the roof down, which means i can't hear the sound of the straight 6 sucking in air at 7,900 rpm.
2. Please make it sunny every day. Also if the price of super unleaded were a bit lower that would be good. It's costing me nearly 400 quid a month to get to work and back.

(60 miles a day ish, 40-50 minutes each way)

Average commuting time is around 15-500 seconds, dependent on whether the activity of answer number one is needed.....the joys of working at home eh?

1. Getting complacent and leaving the house too late, despite it being only a 10mile drive.

2. I honestly can't complain about anything about my commute, I have it very easy!

3. 35-50 mins max per day depending on traffic / lights.

My house is considerably larger than yours

I cycle to work, it's not far, only take 5 minutes and I like to come home for my breaks.

We are often told how marvellous it is to cycle, it will save the world, make us fit and cost nowt. What they forget to mention is how much journey times are affected by the weather. A strong wind can add considerably to a 5 minute bike ride, so would I want a similar percentage to be added to a half hour bike ride to work? Probably not, the car would get used.

About 1.5 hours each way: bus, then train, then tube

Biggest issues are interchanges between tube lines (thankfully I no longer have to do this) and the local bus. I get to the bus stop (round the corner from our house -- say 3 min walk) 5 mins before it's due. So that's 8 mins if the bus is on time. Then it's 10 mins to the station, so that's 18 mins. It gets there 8 mins before the train, so that's 26 mins. A few minutes later it goes past a road that's not far from my house, so effectively it's taken me 30 mins to go nowhere.

I could drive to the station but it's £7 a day parking and I've acquired a lot of dents in the past from the station car park. Or I could walk, but it's 30-35 mins.

1. 6 mile journey by car each way in the london suburbs.. takes half an hour!
2. If schools were to start at 7am instead of 9am.. We'd all be better off as the traffic would be staggered..

25 mile journey by car in Kent, takes half an hour
School traffic does slow it down a little at time but I normally miss it

1. Lorries on back roads which are barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other on. This is classed as a main route to the M6 but the roads are not suitable and yet lorries still crawl down them at 10-15mph insisting this is quicker than dual carriageway north or south to a different junction.

2. Stopping anything over 7.5 ton using the route and/or removing the driving licence from those people who are unable to comprehend how to drive down a motorway and/or dual carriageway.(prime example, this morning somebody doing 40mph down a dual carriageway straddling both lanes and when anyone got close he slammed on. Driver was in his 40's)

Commute time, 30mins to an hour, depending on traffic.
