Mille Miglia 2013
Discussion
Anyone know the dates and times it's in Rome for 2013. Always wanted to sit and watch the cars go by and after visits to Goodwood revival and Le Mans Classic this year feel the need even more . Looks like tours being arranged around May 16th and 17th . Anyone been , give advice and a good vantage point ?????????

My brother got married in Mantuva a couple of years back over the MM weekeend. I took the opportunity to go out a day earlier than Mrs Simes205 and landed in Verona.
Met my other brother in Brescia on the 1st day of the MM and spent the whole day there. That year (2010) there was also a Ferrari parade which meant all the roads leading up to the main square were full of rarities just parked up.
I recommend the main square in Brescia to have a look at all the machinery about to set off.
I never went to see the 'race' itself but did manage to sneak a trip to Modena and Fiorano.....never made it to Sant Aguta or to Ducati.

Hi Mrs M60 and I were in Rome this year to celebrate Mrs M60's 40th, just so happened to be the MM that same weekend. Don't know how that happened, Mrs M60 has no interest in cars.
Managed to pursuade her to go to see them, so we did.
The cars start to arrive in Rome quite late, after tea, and we left to return to our hotel just after midnight, before the last cars had arrived. They come in front of Castle Of St Angelo which is an amazing back drop as they come in and the sound reverberates round the city building walls, they do an interview on a presentation stage then disapear off towards the Vatican. The place is rammed with italians but if you find a break in the crowds or get there early you do get very close to the cars, the smell, sound is amazing. I believe the cars then park up for the night but are away early the following morning.
However.... I haven't done Goodwood, I really want to, I have done the Classics and although you get close to the cars at MM I was quite dissapointed overall. Cannot put my finger on exactly why but it just didn't do it for me like the Classics. May be it was because I was aware Mrs M60 didn't want to really be there and it was her weekend afterall and not a car weekend with the lads.
If you are going to just see the MM I would go to Brescia and stay for the start and the finish. If you want to go to see Rome and have the MM as something to do one evening then fine but be careful where you stay as the public underground tram system shuts down and it can be a very long walk home, it was for us anyway.
Hope this helps

We did this tour back in 2010 and was good fun, not always great hotels and average food, the final Hotel on Lake Garda was a big disappointment, but I understand that this has been changed now.BTW I am not connected with them, just been looking at it for myself next year.

Grand Classic Tours offer a comprehensive package for the Mille Miglia in 2013

I know a few of the guys who went to Angouleme this year and Debbie at GCT managed to get them grandstand tickets and their vehicles in the rally, which is unheard of apparently.
Because of her many contacts throughout motorsport circles,Debbie is in a unique position to tailor the event to your requirements were possible.
Hoping to make it along to the Mille myself next year as it is on the bucket list

I have looked at the official website for the MM but it doesn't give any times
for arriving in specific places ,does it ?
Anyone know what the rough timings are ?
I suppose the easiest thing is to be in Brescia for the start but i would like to see
the cars out on the road too if possible

I've been to (parts of) two Mille Miglia events while on business trips to Italy. Brescia for the start is good, as you get to see all the cars & there is time to examine them. But, once the event gets going it is a bit of a zoo to follow. If you've ever spectated on any rally stages you'll know what I'm trying to say..
If you want to see the cars in action in the sort of context that better reflects what the original races were probably like, then, my advice is to get yourself located on to one of the mountain stages.
The two best known ones are the Futa & the Raticosa passes. I recommend the Raticosa as it is not so far from Brescia. Two options; base yourself in Florence and then drive North up to the road for the Raticosa (signed R65 out of Florence), or, base yourself in Bologna and then drive South & up in to the hills towards Raticosa (signed P65 out of Bologna). Get up into the hills in plenty of time, then get parked off the road & out of the way. The reason to go early will soon become clear - the best spots get filled up first by the locals..
When they come through it is a melee of TV cars, motorbikes with suicidal cameramen on the back, the oldies themseleves, and finally a series of modern pursuit cars (rallying service style; spare parts and a mechanic or two in there..). Great atmostphere and absolutely worth all the waiting. Take a picnic lunch, drinks, camera and you'll have a proper petrolheads day out.
I've looked at the itinerary for the escorted tours but they're only going to take you to Brescia and then somewhere near to the return point to Brescia on the Saturday. They won't be pressing on a bit in the towns..
I'm wondering about it for 2013; and I see that the Monaco F1 race first practice session will be kicking off just 5 days later....not sure the budget will stretch that far at present, but I can vouch that F1 at Monaco is another one for the bucket list & well worth it - once!

Re. the 2013 MM, I have looked at all the commercial offerings and have booked with Scenic car tours who are running a trip giving 4 nights in France ( out and return ) plus 5 nights on Lake Garda which allows for a 15min train ride into Brescia for the start plus the options to visit all the Modena car companies and loads of nice drives. B/B and D is included so give it a look.

Have done exactly that, and am seriously thinking of doing exactly the same. Will report back later. Hope this thread will capture a few more fans of the Event!!!If you look very closely at the official Mille Miglia site you can get the times that cars are expected in respective areas. For info the event has been taken over by a new promoter this year so information may appear differently this time.
Alternatively use us! www.classicgt.co.uk are a fully bonded tour operator (many are not) and have been taking groups to the Mille Miglia for well over 10 years. We have plenty of experience to draw on and a tried and tested itinerary along the way.

Afraid there is only one Mille Miglia run in 2013. The name is misleading, because it's an event run in commemoration of the original event which was stopped back in the last century, when it became too dangerous for drivers and spectators, and impractical to close off 1000kms of public road. The current event is competetive, but not a flat out non-stop speed test like the original.
