A choice of two 1 series'
Discussion
Hello all,
Right-o, the new car search is well and truly on. I have narrowed my choices down to a pair of 120d's, but not sure which to go for.
1) 56 plate SE, auto, 16k miles, black leather. Appx £8500.
2) 54 plate SE, manual, 80k miles, cruise, sports seats with grey leather. Appx £6000.
All things being equal, which should I go for? Do about 20k per year.

All things aren't equal though, one is 2.5 grand more expensive than the other. They have different gearboxes, thats a pretty fundamental difference, we dont know what you prefer! How can we possibly answer this question for you? How can you say you quite fancy a 6 grand car yet ask us if one almost 50% more expensive would be a better buy for you?Right-o, the new car search is well and truly on. Go for No. 1. Newer, Not much more. Cruise can be retro fitted for ~£100Right-o, the new car search is well and truly on. I have narrowed my choices down to a pair of 120d's, but not sure which to go for.

Probably not enough info to go on (no info on condition, history, OP's price sensitivity etc), but assuming the all things equal actually meant other things being equal, the more recent, much lower mileage car sounds like a shoe-in IMHO.
Sounds like much better value on the face of it and unless the OP has a particular aversion to autos, the gearbox shouldn't be much of an issue on the type of car doing that kind of mileage. Can't be many people doing 20k pa on fast back roads.

Ok, to clarify. When I said "all other things being equal" I was referring to each car being in good condition, the insurance, tax, mot etc being similar.
Clearly the cars are not equal! Original budget was around £6k. The £8k car was thrown in as a bit of a wildcard because of the low mileage. £8k is stretching the budget.
Cheers for the helpful answers. As for the rest.... next time I won't bother asking.

Stick with your budget. You'll resent the higher payments, don't let the "nicer" car seduce you. If you are put off by the mileage of the 6 grand car, buy a Focus. Clearly the cars are not equal!
