I fancy building my own website and wondered if you could point me in the right direction for:

Web building software
Domain name registering
Likely costs
Basically to put pics and video links etc

I am with AOL if that`s of any importance.

Thanks

Of course you are Steve, and you will be for a very long time knowing my computer skills I`d just like to know how to do it (I feel I`m missing out and should know!) and to register a domain name for the future. I`ll have a look at "Frontpage" (really basic sounds like my level ) as you were spot in with your Pinnacle recommendation

Cheers

For Domains / Hosting Costs check out my company.

www.Register1.net/vds.php

Host a fair few PH'rs whom I am sure would be happy to vouch.

Do let me know if you need any info / advice.

Reading through it Jamie - already noted free domain name with VDSpro until 31st August so reading through it - "gobbledegook" comes to mind but I`ll try and decipher it

Ok - I am assuming that domain parking is holding a chosen web address, eg www.iandbeech.com and VDSpro is all singing/dancing for hosting my website. I`m going to look into this a little more now. I assume I could purchase even if I haven`t set up any pages or designed my site yet?

yep, Jim is one of the best hosts I've had, thoroughly helpful bloke and I can't remember ever experiencing downtime on reg1

domain parking is just registering the name and having a holding page, so when you go to www.yourdomain.com it says "registered" and nobody can nick it.

VDS is a hosting interface that allows you to upload pages/images/multimedia/etc and set up email addresses, see traffic figures, etc.

If there is anything you need explaining, feel free to drop me / Support a mail via profile or support@

You can purchase whenever you want, accounts are setup instantly, and you can upload immediately (via IP)

New Domain Orders should be live the following morning.

Parking is simply that, the domain sits there, and bounces all mail to your BT account, all web to your NTL webspace etc...

VDS is the 'pukka' hosting.

Your Own IP, your own Logs, your Own Webserver / Mailserver / FTP Server / Free Forum Software, Free Shop Software, Free Photo Gallery Software etc, and as you say, a Free domain, plus more traffic than you can shake a stick at... all hosting right here in Blighty

Enjoy.

Been to PC world and they didn`t have ANY web software - not even Frontpage, waiting for some more to come in

Just had a look online, so any feedback on these two packages would be gratefully received, bearing in mind I will be a complete novice - I don`t even know what "HTML" stands for

Microsoft "Front page" 2003 @ £149.99
Serif "Internet design suite" @ £49.99

Hyper Text Markup Language {HTML)

I use Frontpage if I ever need to knock summin about when the developers are away..

its decent enough, simple to use, and doesnt add tons of its own code (anymore!)

Its a decent enough package if you need it.

Dreamweaver!

Its so easy to use, I am a complete web numpty and in the last 3 weeks have knocked up two commercial websites no trouble at all.

Not saying that they are any good, but Dreamweaver did make it easy...

Couldn't agree more. HTML is a piece of p*ss, save your money.

Dreamweaver does beat the pants off frontpage. However, i've not used frontpage for a few years so it might be better now, but judging by the way MS office has gone recently, i doubt it.

Hi Jamie, Considering buying FP through Amazon.co.uk - watch this space

Edited to add - have now purchased FP brand new for £59.99, pretty pleased with that Probably going to miss the "free domain" with VDSpro as I won`t have even played with it by the deadline

Dont Worry about the Free Domain thing.

PH'rs ALWAYS get taken care of! (well, so does everyone else too :P)

It wont be an issue

I have extended the Free Domain offering to September now

Enjoy.
