Getting back into biking.

Well Ive done it I got my old bike back (Marin Quake 9) after it sat at my old work for 5 or 6 years.

I used to be daft about biking but along came women, getting pissed, cars, women again, a child (bloody women) then motorbikes

Im bored as hell once the motorbike is wrapped up over the winter so I want to get back out on the push bike then. I used to be mad about drop offs and dual racing hopefully it still holds the same buzz.

I need to get the bike working again. I had a quick look at it yesterday and alot needs doing. This is the list I have in my head so far, it most likely will grow once I clean it and strip it down then try put it back together again.

what needs replacing
brake system
bottom bracket
chain
gears (maybe)
head bearings
stem
bars
grips

Ill get some photos of it when I go to work on it but hopefully people on here can help me out gettin it back on the road.

With me being away from biking for so long I dont know whats the best stuff out there and what to get or not.

I no doubt will have forgot how to do a few wee things so I might need help there again.

well, that was a short lived adventure.

I started taking the bike to bits today right down to just the frame.

Everything was going great then I got to the cranks.

Got the bolt from one side off fine, but the right hand side one wouldnt move.

I tried everything, it was just rounding my allen keys.

So I decided to drill through it using a drill powered from a generator. Managed to get through the bolt but nothing the crank is still stuck on.

Well seeing as the frame is fked if I cant get the cranks off I decided to set about it with a grinder thinking fk it, Im getting this thing off.

Nothing the cranks have seized and just wont come off so thats the frame fked.

You will struggle to grind ally, pop it down to your local decent bike shop, it's not an unusual thing to get in to have to remove there are ways and means, big pullers come in handy in such situations.

To be honest when I was stripping it I could see the pounds signs adding up and up.

Brakes fked
Tyres gone
forks need serviced
cranks now fked
bottom bracket
gears (new set needed)

The only thing worth keeping was the frame to be honest, rust had got to everything else.

I might pop along to see if I can save the frame but to be honest Im going to need to spend a small fortune on it to get it back on the road Id be as well as just buying another bike.

There are some bargains out there to be had this time of year, if you can get the frame salvaged without spending too much always pop it on ebay and see what you can get back.

I might take it along to a bike shop them as the frame is still in good nick.

a fair few scuffs and chips from dropping it and falling off but only cosmetic.
