The cost of running my wedge
Discussion
OK i'm sorning the wedge for the winter but id thought id do a (very rough)cost estimate of running my wedge for the summer just in terms of Fuel Insurance and Tax
Fuel 800mls @ 25mpg = 32gals = 146 ltrs @ £1.40 = £204.40
Insurance = £212
Tax (RFL) = £121
total = £537.40
Cost per mile £537/800mls = 67p per mile
The frightening thing is the proportion of this money that goes straight to the tax man -
All of the RFL = £212
Insurance tax = £12
Duty/VAT on fuel @ 80% of total selling price = £163.50
A total of = £296.50
or to put it another way around 55% of my running costs are pure taxes or to put it another way without taxes my running costs would have been about 30p per mile !!!!

It appears i made a couple of errors - one in my adding up (ran out of fingers)and one in the level of Duty/VAT on fuel is apparently "ONLY" 60%.
Here's some revised figs
All of the RFL = £121
Insurance tax = £12
Duty/VAT on fuel @ 80% of total selling price = £122.64
A total of = £255.64
This makes the percentage of tax paid ONLY 47%
Without tax my running costs would have been 35p per mile !!!
Still its good to know that all that hard earned cash i hand over in taxes is being spent so wisely......(overseas aid ,benefit payments to feckless people with six kids by four different fathers ,illegal asylum seekers , politicians expenses....) You never know they might even spend some of it on maintaining the roads

I thought it was higher too hence 80% in my first post but i looked on a website (petrolprices.com) and they recon the breakdown on a litre of fuel (priced at 132.9p) is:-
Fuel duty 57.95p -------- F
g disgusting
Cost of product 47.8p
VAT 22.15p
Retailer/delivery 5p
Your right about the VAT they charge it at the end so you pay VAT on the duty being levied too - so your taxed on the tax !!!!

Hi Peeps..Had a bit of a rough night as i ended up in hospital with a kidney infection after peeing blood..Very scary..Still im on the mend but i wont be ranting about how we get ripped off in this country..(Not yet anyway's)...Im sure i read that petrol stations were going to start putting boards up as regards to fuel duty in a plight to lower the taxation...I havent seen one yet...I think its a bargaining tool in respect of governmental pressure..If eveyone started a campaign to cut fuel prices, Even in half then they could but would still be earning a tidy profit.."Fat cats getting fatter..One day they will pop"...Ziga
Bu993ring hell Mark, not good! Hope you get sorted soon
I seem to recall this 'cost per mile' thing has been done on here a few times, once fairly recently... I think I calculated that for the miles I've done in my 390SE in 12 years it worked out (including fuel, insurance and depreciation) at something like a pound a mile. Ask yourself this: can you go one mile on a bus or in a taxi, for a pound?

Even if you COULD go 1 mile per £ in a bus/taxi it would be boring as hell compared to doing it by TVR....
I have said that even if petrol became (God forbid!) £5 per litre (instead of about that for a Gallon) I'd still drive my TVR, I might drive it a little bit less, but I'd still drive it!
Part of the problem is that some people NEED a car and while that is the case the government etc can charge almost what they like and get away with it.
I'm one of the "lucky" ones, I walk to work (about 10mins) so don't need to use the car daily, during the fuel protests, I just stopped using my car, I was fortunate that I had filled up a few days before they hit as well so had a tank of "cheap" petrol in the Jag if I had needed to use it.
