Considering a FFRR I need help!
Discussion
Evening all,
I have considered a FFRR for quite a long time and I'm thinking that now might be the time to do it!
I'm looking for something around the 11-12k mark with hopefully under 80k miles.
I like the idea of a 4.4 V8 but will it ruin me? Are the diesels any good?
Are there any no go colours that I should obviously avoid?
The kind of car in my price range will be something like a 2003/2004 is there anything in particular I should look out for?
Also what kind of mileage are they capable of? I've seen some with 180k on but is this common or do many fail long before?
Sorry for so many questions!

good entry point is 2004/5 TD6 Vogue at about 12k with 60-80000 miles and full service history.
A 300 quid remap gets you 50 more bhp and lbs/ft of torque and an extra 3 mpg too.
get it inspected at your local land rover independent before committing to buy - if the seller has nothing to hide he will not mind submitting it for a once-over - make sure your man has an auto logic reader.
This will cost you a hundred quid but will be worth it.
Avoid Overfinch 22 - inch wheels and copies thereof.
Other overfinch stuff is nice but don't pay extra for it - there are plenty of nice ones out there so you can be choosy

Hello David,
4.4 V8 is lovely - don't dismiss it on the basis of thirst until you've driven one! And also the diesel isn't a great deal more frugal anyway - perhaps a typical mixed 26mpg instead of 22mpg for the petrol? That's a guesstimate, I'm sure someone will have some proper numbers.
Loads of info on what to look for on previous threads here, also at www.fullfatrr.com in case you don't know that forum.
They generally seem to cope fine with higher miles; gearbox oil changes are recommended at high miles, and some suspension bushes can wear (squeaky suspension), but the engine and driveline seem relatively robust, and the air suspension also generally fine. Coolant leaks from the radiator end tanks are fairly common but easy to spot and you can modify the electric pusher fan cowl to stop it happening again on the new rad. Lots of electrical things to check out as with any big luxury car.
There's no nicer way to travel - you'll love it if you get one.

I can't believe how bad the diesel gearbox is- seems crazy. I have my eye on 2 FFRR's in V8 guise and hope to be going to look at them this week.
Just how bad is the mpg on one of these 2003/4 cars? Would appreciate experiences of around town driving and long run motorway.
Cheers,
David

Ours (4.4) has 103k on the clock. Various niggles... but the main problem we have is susp air bags. Had 2 replaced.. £500 a corner..
Other than that everything works. Sometimes throws a fault code here and there. Did the discs and pads myself and the rear bushes. About £400.
Needs 4 tyres soon.. £800... hmm getting expensive! LOL.
Oh and the gearbox is giving up... £2500 to get a proper job done TBH, lots of places will do it for £1200 - £1500 but they dont upgrade the right bits and just throw and old box in. And sooner or later the box will go... I am just waiting for mine to fail now - in the hope that when it does a proper re-con might be cheaper..
We get 11mpg - around town more like high teens on a run. Seems about normal.
Brilliant vehicle in the snow over the last couple of winters.
TBH I would say well over 50% of faults are related to the suspension and gearbox. So if you can find one with a good box and susp then go for it.
That said ours had a recon box at 85k and its on the way out again (previous owner had it done cheap) and at c25% of the value of the vehilce its a lot to spend.
HTH!
