Came back to find a large dent on my car!

So I came back after leaving my car parked last night to find this on my door! Really can't work out how it would have happened as I am always careful parking, leaving it away from everyone else etc, and this particular time I was parked on a wide road, with the door facing the pavement. so I can only presume someone has whacked it with something!
The paint isn't even damaged either, so this leads to me to think someone has hit it with something with a clean shot, rather than accidently scrape a door against it which would have taken off paint work.
Can anyone work out what/who could have done it? how much would I be looking at for repair? is it a big job?

So annoying. My mate woke up last week to see his car with a bad dent and scratches over the rear wheel arch. He lives in a cul de sac and there's a shop on the corner. He thinks it was probably one of the vans who use the street as a turning circle for the shop. Don't think his was targeted but makes him feel no better seeing his car like that with no note.
erm yeah...they were for another project lol. think im lucky its just missed the crease in the door as think that would make it harder to get out? are they expensive to get removed then? the paint doesn't look touched. dont think i was targeted as i was dropping my gf back at uni 30miles from my house when it was parked
Cheers for the replies, I thought about a cyclist to begin with, but the dent isn't that wide, it's just long, thin, and deep, with no damage to the paint at all, which makes me think it has been struck cleanly. to give you an idea on the size, I can put my finger flat against it, and it is almost a perfect fit.
I know the pictures aren't too good, was hard to get them without reflections.

Your best bet is one of these paintless dent removal firms. I had my Audi rear door dented somehow, it was about the same size as yours but not quite as deep - same location too!! Quoted me £65 to £85 going off my description, once he'd done the work he charged me £50, as he said it wasn't quite as bad as he expected.
Done an excellent job too, no paint damage and only took him half an hour to sort.

I bet a cyclist has been on the pavement and while stopping for or avoiding a pedestrian they have lost their balance and planted the end of the handlebars into your door.

Had this on my car, it was a kid on his push bike who dropped his bike next to/on my car.

I have just rung and left a message on his answer phone to get a quote, if you confirmed you had used him and he was cheap, and did a good job, that would give me more confidence in going with him.

Are there a lot of students in that street? When I lived in Winchester a lot of cars were vandalised by students thinking they were 'kewl yah' by kicking off wing mirrors, bending wipers, running over cars etc

well i have been trying to ring that number and have been getting no answer. dropped into a body shop my mate used recently that he was full of praise for. and they say about 100quid and they can do it this week. so think i am going to go with them. its a lot less than i first expected, although i know may be more than a mobile dent guy, but the figures aren't worlds apart. still annoying to be 100 down though just to put me in exactly the same position as yesterday!
Sorry, i probably didn't make it clear. she is staying in a big complex kind of student accommodation. its quite an industrial area, so no private houses close by, just a few pubs and shops etc. its right next to Bramall lane in Sheffield if anyone knows the area.

It's annoying when it happens. I remember when I moved in to my old flat which was a new build, half the estate was still under construction, so it was basically one big building site. I came down to go to work one morning to find a 2 x 4 shape hole slap bang in the middle of my windscreen 
Obviously some idiot had reversed with some wood overhanging the back of his van, could I find the driver responsible, could I fook. Needless to say I parked elsewhere from then on.

UPDATE: I got my car back this morning for anyone who is interested......
The car now looks perfect! you wouldn't be able to tell there was any damage at all! he didn't get to keep it as long as he wanted, as I was rushing him because I am going away this weekend and using the car, so he said the paint might still be a bit "soft" and liable to pick up damage as I am driving, he has told me to come back in a couple of weeks so he can spend another half an hour just finishing it off, which is fair enough.
The final cost in the end was £100, and he also sorted a few minor niggles for free that I had as well, which was the bumper not sitting flush and always popping out slightly, and buffing up a dull patch on the boot.
So alls well that ends well in the end! it's still £100 I could have better spend, but he has done a brilliant job, for a very good price, and been helpful as well.
