I've got an iPhone and am looking for apps that will track my rides and give me some stats, any recommendations? Most of my riding is off road, tracks, woods, canal paths etc so an app that is not just road based will be helpful.

Also any other useful cycling apps I should look at?

I only do road cycling, but can recommend Strava. You can create your own segments, and compare yourself to others who have ridden the same. There's even a Pistonheads club on Strava thumbup.

I started with map my ride free just to see what it was all about & I think they're quite good for keeping track of stuff.

All my cycling mates said cyclemeter was the best, & due to some incessantly annoying pop up ad in the map my ride app I downloaded it.

I've got to say I think map my ride was better, there are more routes that others have uploaded & it just seems more user friendly.

I think they all do much of a muchness but map my ride edges it for me.

I use CycleMeter on my iPhone and really rate it (have played with the others too, but stuck with CycleMeter)

I've recently started using runtastic mountain bike app which so far is proving very good.
It covers most details including avg. speed, max. speed, elevation up and down calories burnt and avg. pace. It also includes charts measuring elevation vs. speed and a spilt table so you can break down your ride mile by mile. You can also purchase sensors for your bike and heart to add extra data to the app.

Another great feature on the app is that you can download a very detailed map of any given area before you set off, this means even if you lose signal you can still access the map.

I use Endemondo on Android (and friends use it on iPhone) it will automatically publish your ride to facebook so friends can track your ride (and performance!) in real time

Map my ride here too. I only use it to have a look at my route afterwards and I'm not interested in all that competitive stuff that Strava encourages wink

Thanks so far, some good options to download and try. I'm not really a 'competitive' rider, just want a bit more info than my speedo can give me, it would be nice to know climbs and elevations etc and also keep a log on the home PC so I can compare times on regular rides etc.

The runtastic app has the ability to log on from a home PC.
It also has a feature called 'cheer me on' basically if you set the app up to post to facebook (can also be done via the runtastic website)friends can record a message and send it to you. I found out half way through a ride when my music cut out briefly and a lovely abusive message came through from a friend!

Garmin Fit seems ok, (not free but not expensive) can upload to Garmin website to track/publish as you feel necessary.

I use the paid-for version of MapMyTracks (Outfront) on iPhone. Seems to do everything I want of it.

Is everyone using iPhone 3 for any of these, or do I need to upgrade finally?

I think most apps just need gps. If you want to add things like heart rate sensors, that might be an issue.
