Odd question on insurance

Hey M Power fans,
Being originally from New Zealand, i am still a bit lost on some of the vagaries of the British way of doing things, so i am hoping for some wisdom.
I recently replaced our Avantime with an M5, and now i am trying to cancel the insurance on my Avantime, but my insurer is saying that they cant stop the insurance until they get my insurance certificate back.
Is this normal?
If so, its a right pain in the butt, as i shredded it after selling the car last month!

In my experience I've just been asked to destroy the certificate.
