Anyone know much about these monsters?

Getting interested to trade 3200 for something like this for fun and LM etc.

Are they a reasonable proposition to run on a modest budget (say 2k a year?), or gargantuan money pit? Any good resources out there? (Will try the archive but search on ph is dead at the mo)

I've read someowhere it is one of the most expensive ferraris to service before anything even goes wrong. Tread carefully.

I've heard from an owner that an early BB (365GT4BB) costs cinquecento per year if he drives it around 3k miles.
The list price of a new Fiat cinquecento that is.

Sounds like an ouch. Knew there must be a catch!
Problem is this :

Nice isn't it And wouldn't that be fun at VMAX! (Fun like trying to keep it on the ground though I guess!)

I wouldn't be *too* quick to believe the sensational stuff- if we took everything we heard as an absolute certainty, I doubt any of us would own a Ferrari. I've emailed this link to someone I know who's run one of these cars for several years. I know he's done some work on it, but he hasn't given me the impression that running costs are horrendous. Hopefully Richard'll chime in with some facts.

red rag to a bull that kind of language mungo!

in fairness an unnamed dealer told me on the quiet that a decently lookked after one shouldn't cost the earth to run and will be relatively dependable.

In the end I'm weighing up the cost of 1 year maserati warranty + 600 quid servicing against the likely maintenance cost of this beasty, and I can't see that it will be toooo different at the mo.

I will ponder. If by chance I flog my flat this month and get what I want for it then the difference in trade between the 3200 and this little monster could be found, by grand conincidence I shall then be 30 opening the way for cheap classic insurance and bob is my mothers brother...

That Talacrest one is gorgeous. I spotted that a while back and have been keeping a lustful eye on it.

Chris Rea spent some big money on it while it was in his care, and it looks like a car which has had thoughtful and useful enhancements. More power than normal too !

My dream Ferrari - the one to have when I was a nipper.

I'd be tempted to but would expect it to cost about £2K per year to maintain even if it didn't get used at all. On the other hand it's not really expensive so if you put aside a bit more you could probably actually use it. Make sure you have another car though.

If I win the lottery tonight I'm going to buy it before you!

Think all Ferrari's that kind of age cost a fortune to run especially the 412 thats meant to be like £12k a year in servicing someone once told me!

Not even close. My old man had a 400i before he changed it for the 456. He had a full service with a few replacement hoses and some other bits and bobs and it was about £1,400 all in and that was at an official dealer. Specialists would be able to look after them for a fair few quid less.

The costs would be huge if anything went wrong with the engine though, same as any Ferrari V12.

Most of the cash spent on them seems to be petrol. The 456 swallows about £90's worth of the stuff in one go and it doesnt last long if you have some fun with your right foot!

My thanks to Richard, who came through with his experiences:

Richard (BB owner for 7 years)

We bought the car for its looks and charisma and with research into running cost – after all, if you can’t keep it in good condition you will only encourage bad experiences for yourself!

We use an independent engineer who specialises in Ferrari – cheaper than a main dealer plus he has an interest in doing a good job (bad news travels fast – good news travels quicker!). These are 12 cylinder cars and there should be no surprise that they cost as much as a V12 to keep – some owners insist that they are 180 Vs as they fire in the V12 order but lets cut to the facts (as I have found)

Servicing – small service first year (5 hundred) and a belt change every second year (16 hundred to 2 thousand with all the bits) but with a thirty year old car there is ALWAYS something you want to improve or tweak and this adds to the cost.

Insurance is sweet – I am in my forties and fully comp for wife and myself is £400ish for agreed value (unlimited mileage – but we do around 5K a year) and in the full picture this actually allows for more to be spent on servicing in your budget.

Fuel – about 15 to the gallon now we have it running spot on. MPG seems to be around the same for track or road speeds. One of the higher octane fuels should be used with an additive– I use Optimax with TetraBoost as it is a true lead additive and also boosts the octane rating to near the 100 mark which the BB likes.

We have an account to cover costs (not fuel) and we put aside 5 grand a year - the balance is growing quite well but this is insurance against future unplanned problems.

Finally, fun – Driving position is the Italian knees each side of the wheel type, thrashing the engine is not needed (there is bags of torque) and the initially heavy steering (non-assisted) lightens above 30 mph. This car is a honey to drive that can turn into a beast if you wish – or if you make an error. Radio, not a chance! – the engine sound is glorious.

Hope this helps anyone interested in this model – buy soon, get a pre-purchase survey, prices are rising slowly on a car that is just starting to be appreciated.

Brillian work Kev - much appreciated and serious food for thought.

Sounds like servicing / mpg is all in the right ballpark. I guess it's just the potential for 'extra work' is the scary thing though. Sticking 5k a year away sounds prudent, but rather expensive!!!

Don't thank me, thank Richard. And £5K a year is Richard being sensible- he's covering the possibility of a major failure. It's making me feel guilty I don't do the same!
