Hi everyone.

I've been viewing this forum for hints/tips for years but never got round to signing-up. Well, here I am.

I've been into cars since i can remember - had a wide variety of cars over the years, but in a nutshell ot goes; classics, minis, bland, a bit max-power for a few dark years and v-dubs.

I've been a member of the VWDRC 'Volkswagen Drag Racing Club' since 2008, and I race in the VW Sportsman class - Runner-up in 2009 and Champion in 2010

Here's my '74 Karmann Ghia Coupe.

She's changed a fair bit since I bought her in 2005. She's gone through various engine specs, suspension, wheels, tyres, gearbox, body mods etc over the years.

Full-flowed
1 litre breather by StainlessTill Exhausts

Gearbox:

Bugpack Intermediate strap
Solid rear mount.

Suspension: Front:
3" Narrowed BJ Beam, set at -6"
Stock disc/calipers
Short Empi oil shocks
Rear:
Stock height
Type 2 snubbers
KYB GR2 Gas filled

Wheels/Tyres:
Original 5x15 ET35 'thin-lip' Rivieras
165/50 Nankang, 205/60 Federal

Body:
Large Engineering 8pt cage built to 8.50s, MSA tagged to 10:00s
Fibreglass flp-front end
Fibreglass rear end by HRC Body & Paintshop
Removable rear engine tray
Shaved side-trim
Kirkey lightweight ali seats
Schroth 6pt harness
TRS Window net
Tacho & oil pressure guage
Regulator/coil relocated to luggage area
Finished in VW Riviera Blue by HRC Body & Paintshop

Performance:
Not been dyno'd/run since fuel upgrade but last run:
16.01 off the gas at 1000ft (carbs emptied)
Before that she was 122bhp @ flywheel.
Hoping for 15.4 @ 85mph and 130bhp

Hi, nice looking car, but seriously, if your drag racing it you should super/turbo it.

or put some serious mods, 85 mph at a quarter of a mile, i recon I could do better on a 2 stroke 125 bike.

You're probably right. Let me explain things a little.

There are many classes of drag racing, some are about out & out speed (heads-up), some are about consistency and hitting a target time(bracket or ET).

All of the heads-up classes pretty much require (if you want to be competitive) a car that will run under 10 seconds; it starts with Outlaw Flat Four (low 9's), Street Eliminator (low 7's), so let's not even get into Pro Modified, Super Modified etc. Getting a street car with the flat-four air-cooled engine down to those times requires a fair amount of investment.

I've always been a VW nut at heart, and the VWDRC have been around for 25 years and are a great bunch of people to go racing with. It fits in perfectly with what I enjoy about the VW scene

With regards to performance, a standard 1600 Ghia will travel from 0-60 in about 16 seconds, mine's in the low 8's. On the strip a stocker will do something like 20.5@65mph. So by comparison I'm fairly happy with what I've managed with a pocket-money budget.

The racing and the performances might not be everyone's cup of tea, and I respect that, but I thoroughly enjoy it.

Hmmm drag racing you say.... Sounds like something I could get into.

I have made a few posts in here Russ, mainly in the lemans pages, Ph is ok but if i'm honest on the whole Ph doesn't "get" drag racing.

fair enough, dont really know much about drag racing other than going really really fast in a straight line, didnt actually think there was lower power classes, and I was pretty drunk last night when posting that.

Nice to see something that isn't the usual 'dub-scene' stuff! Is it street legal?

Thanks veevee. By 'dub-scene' do you mean covered in rust/primer? She spent a few years looking like that I'm afraid. Yep, all street-legal, still got lights, wipers, treaded tyres, MOT etc
