With a view to educating a future purchase, I thought i'd stump up some cash and do this day over at Silverstone. It was absolutely fantastic; thoroughly recommended if you haven't driven a GT3/RS and want a taste of a proper road legal 911 racer. Clearly the highlight of the day was some pleasantly swift laps around their b-road circuit in the 4.0 GT3RS; truly an awesome beast, and the most capable of the pack. The obvious choice really.

Back in the real world of my finances, I was surprised to come away with a realistic desire to own the 997.1 GT3 RS rather than the Gen 2 car. It felt decidedly less filtered in it's responses. The Gen 2 car was clearly quicker and had noticeable additional torque lower down the rev range but the Gen 1 felt like the most honest of the two series GT3 RSs.

Which leaves me with a final factor in the eventual likely purchase: It'll either be Orange or Green but I wanted to get an idea of how these colours are received out on the road on our jealous little island. Do they attract negative behaviours or do people savour the fact that someone is bonkers enough to buy a roll-caged, noisy, hard car and drive it around the streets as was the case in my late (but black in colour) GT3?

I test drove a Gen 1 car (orange with black wheels, decals etc) for half an hour earlier in the year. Within that half hour I had two pr*ts stuck to the rear bumper, both executed do or die overtaking maneuvers to get past me. I commented to my passenger (the vendor) that I'd feared this might be the reaction one would receive in such a car. It did put me off, so I bought a "vanilla" Gen GT3 instead. In the short amount of time I owned it, I had no issues with boy racers trying to impress me. Not really what you want to hear, as I know you've done/are doing the vanilla Gen 1 thing.

Personally I'd go the "stealth" route if I were doing the Gen 1 RS thing.

Haha! Yes I was looking at that one over at 911 Virgin - It looks pretty fantastic but the next GTx will be a lifer I think as I so thoroughly enjoyed my last one. Maybe I should just buy another minter GT3... I can't help but feel the RS will always be that bit more special and might even appreciate later down the line a-la 964RS.

They're a few years off doing that, but yes, they are more "special" than a vanilla Gen 1. The black is a good compromise, keep it stealth whilst you enjoy it over the next few years. Once it reaches classic status you get the wheels painted along with the wind end plates and door mirrors and a set of decals applied.

More seriously never had one single problem with the RS, and it was my daily drive in Central London...a little over 17kmiles in 1 year. Only got thumbs up.
do it!

Firstly green ones are like hens teeth so orange is probably an easier find.

I had an orange one until last week and it was a brilliant car. Drove it across Europe and the UK with nothing but positive reactions doing 10,000 miles in a year, it was also with a Europipe exhaust fitted so it was quite loud.

The car itself was no bother mechanically but living in central London the splitter slows you down a bit on the speed bumps and the clutch is heavy.

I only sold it to minimise depreciation before the winter and not be dependent on the weather for a nice drive and to get a 997 Turbo which was delivered on Friday, light clutch, not too low, easy to get in and out of and a rocketship!

Next summer I will be back in a 7.2 RS but my orange RS was my favourite car by far out of several cars including a Gallardo Superleggera.

Driving an Orange RS I think it's unavoidable having the nutter brigade trying to display their prowess at traffic lights, on motorways etc. It can be extremely funny watching them overstress themselves and their Corsa/Transit/BMW.

However, for every negative response there are always positive responses especially at trackdays or other motoring events (they do stand out in a field full of grey and silver Porsches). My wife flatly refuses to travel in the car because of the amount of attention it gets and was very disappointed in me buying such a bright colour...........the upside is of this is of course she never wants to drive it!

I would suggest you buy the car and enjoy it for it is, a brightly coloured plaything!

Been fortunate to have owned one of each colour.

On the whole, I'd say they get more positive reaction than most Porsches, people tend to know they are a proper
Enthusiasts car, made for driving, rather than just polishing.

Very interesting. we are talking about 997 RS.1 vs. RS.2 here ? Ive not driven the 3.8 RS but was always under the impression that it was the rawer, more connected car. I'm not disagreeing because I don't have a clue ... just interested to find out.

And has to be green for me ... with green outer rims which looks fab to me. If you are getting hassled by scrotes ... move area !

x2

and that's the beauty of black/orange cars. You can make them "stealth" and then reapply decals, endplates & paint wheels back to OE spec if required

Only an idiot would buy that one wink

Green cars are very rare and if you can find one then a good luck. At the moment the choice is orange/black or black/orange. I plumped for black. The orange highlights "lift" it enough for me. Just the right balance.
The car at 911 Virgin is a fine example I believe and is a "stealthed" Black/Orange car with alcon rotors replacing the ceramics

Been a couple of years since my last GT3 and I am just loving being back in one. Its just a sensational sports car in everyway. More supple ride than I recall and I honestly think the RS's get the pick of the motors. Single mass flywheel too of course which helps.
I love the ceramics myself. If you only do occasional track days then the PCCBs make the most sense for a road car.Best brakes I've ever tried by a margin (The steels from Porsche being the second best ! )

Yeah, it was an interesting (and very pleasurable) comparison to make, driving the 3 cars back to back. The cars in question were an Orange 997.1 GT3 RS, White 997.2 GT3 RS and a White 4.0 GT3 RS. The Orange, gen 1 car was cold when I jumped in so took it easy while it warmed up (I'm very glad they encourage this behaviour if only for subsequent buyers). It was quite simply sublime; just the right amount of shove, fantastically vocal, scything through corners, awesome grip on those cup tyres... The Gen 2 car was already warm, obviously also turned in incredibly sharply, was very vocal. I think it may have been somewhat down to slightly altered gear ratios (that could be bks, it's just how it felt). I noticed at similar or slightly higher speeds, I was closer to 6 and 7k revs, where the gen 1 car was lower in the range.

All fantastic machinery. Green would be my ideal choice... hmmm.
