I'm looking for the above at the moment and after seeing a couple of duffers the hunt goes on.

Spotted this on the 'bay this morning....

Advert looks honest, as does the car. Short MOT but seller seems confident alls well-

Thoughts?

Off to view thursday, spoken to seller and lots of good stuff. Only advisories on last MOT were for both front tyres, which were duly replaced (which is good as the Celtic alloys take 235/50's!)

Full history and two keys/fobs which is nice!

yes, looks decent enough for the money. not perfect of course.
i think most will agree the 4.0 is the best option. same ecomnoy as 3.2 but more power and the 4.0 has sport button.

am not keen on the wheels myself, but those can be changed and sold on. 300 xjr wheels are better

things to check,

heating and air con works?
check ALL electrics work, though its likely the lcd clock will not
rust bubbles on rear arches- not a simple job, as its starts from the inside, so the whole rch needs cutting oput and replacement panels welding in. est £1000 for proper repair.
worn bushes- clunks when going over bumps?
check for any diff noise or oil leaks

on the plus side the seat bolster looks really good compare to most x300!

if you want all the toys and more leather though, go for sovereign, daimler, xjr

Thanks. I know it's not perfect but for less than a grand it doesn't look too shabby! I bet with some tidying and a good polish most non-car types wouldn't know it cost so little!

Wheels aren't my favourites either, as you say XJR jobbys are nice but as these have got new boots on the front they can stay for a bit. I quiet like the "Celtic" style 17" type so may look at swapping for those (less money than XJR's)

On the chrome leather front I actually want a Sport because I prefer less chrome and wood! I'm 27 and I think I'm a bit young for a Sov or Daimler yet wink

yes, fair enough. if the tyres are new, makes financial sense to run that rubber.

so you are too young for chrome eh! haha
funny as my first jag was xj40 sport (3.2s), for similar reasons, i thought the chrome was a bit OTT,
But now i am 36 i do like it (but i like the sport still too). either i have got old overnight, or maybe the charm has rubbed off on me.

you are right, £1000 for a car of any kind is peanuts really, but obviously you want to buy the best available for your money.
have you looked at any (supercharged) XJR too? or will the insurance be a problem?

I had an XJ40 when I was 22 ish, first Jag! Had cream cow with piping, and a manual box. More recently had a Celebration XJS which is still the best car i've ever owned, should never have sold it.

I'd love an XJR but the insurance is too much to justify; I really shouldn't be getting a second car full stop but with a sub 1k purchase price and 240 quid fully comp insurance I can just about justify a 4.0 XJ6.

they are ridiculously cheap for the quality of car.

what quote did you get for the XJR then? i guessed it maybe an insurance issue that stopped your xjr dreams.

It was over 1000, which i'm just not prepared to pay for a hack! my 4.0 TVR Chimaera was only 290 ish!

Yep, garaged, 3k a year and as it's a classic policy no need for NCB (which is on my daily) I'm 27, clean licence and history in a safe rural postcode.

i pay £151. F/C, 3k limit, rural devon, on a driveway, age 36, classic policy with lancaster. 93 xj40 sovereign 4.0
for 6k limit its still under £200 though.

tricky as there is no such thing as the cheapest insurance for everyone. as its all down to each persons circumstance, and we are all different. but i have found Lancaster to be best for me.

I tried them, think I used them for my XJS which was sub 200, but for the X300 they weren't anything like competitive. As you say, horses for courses.
