I mean non-dealers.
I like to change my car often but I hate hate hate the selling process so I had half a mind that next time I advertise on here I will accept part exchange to make the whole process a lot easier, ideally even consider straight swaps with similar value cars to make the whole process simple and costless for both parties.
Assuming someone offered me something vaguely interesting then it would move the whole process along quicker and everyones a winner.
Has anyone done this purely for swapping cars sake (as opposed to trying to get the buyer's car cheap and making money on it like a dealer).?
DOes it work or is there too much quibbling on cars values etc?

I once swapped an E39 528 touring for a VW Passat 1.9tdi.

Swapped with SilverbackMike off here.

This was several years ago and you have to be lucky/in the right place right time etc.

I straight swapped my old Hearse for a Pontiac.

Last year I took a 205 cti, a still in its box i phone and a still in the box Mac laptop thing in straight swap for my 86 924s, shifted the Mac and i phone straight away on ebay for circa £1250 which was what the Porsche owed me and got a 205 that I loved for free, hurrah!

As Im always changing and selling cars I'll gladly take any swapper if the figures work in my favour as I can always sell it on but Im very much at the old smoker end of the market!

I think this was my gut feeling. That you need a big coincidence for it to work out nicely, although in my case it's always a second car so Im probably open to much broader criteria of interesting car than most.

I have a few times.... or taken p.x's

All through pistonheads.

First of all bought a Civic Type R, i hated it. So i ended up swapping it for a 400bhp Impreza.

This annoyed me, so i ended up swapping it for a Golf Gti Tdi anniversary for cost savings.

The Golf was too slow so i swapped it for a 330ci which was nice, then i was ready to get into something fast again.

I took a trade in for a 300bhp Mr2 turbo + some cash for the 330ci.

Then when i bought my E46 M3, i px the Mr2 turbo against it.

All from the public, no dealers. It worked out pretty well i think.

In my experience it is usually an approach taken by dreamers and chancers trying to offload a problematic car.

Something along the lines of " need to sell this lovely 2 seater as the mrs is pregnant", then its " will PX for a Caterham, Atom, stripped out whatever".

biglaugh I was worried that's how I would seem. Still, a good advert should be able to dispel that.

We tried it on here once, the ph swap shop.
I think it's a great idea as like the op I like to regularly change cars.
At the time I'm sure someone asked the mods to create a ph swap shop wiki / sub group

I've not heard of it in years but it was common a few years back. My brother and his mates swapped cars all the time. A mate of mine swapped his red 1.6 gte nova for his pals nova sport. He wanted a rare car and his mate wanted the bigger engine. Fair enough.

Im pretty sure it was me. I asked ages ago and I think the response was the standard "We're currently changing a few things so its an idea for the future." Or "no"

How would it work though? It would just be a mess of random posts that never resulted in a swap.

You can search the classifieds by PX - maybe this could be developed a bit so if you click the "Swap considerd" button it compiles a list of active ads where this has been selected....maybe.

the trouble is, when i've tried it, i've said eg, Maserati 3200GT, might part ex for audi RS4 or RS6.

You then get 20 emails and not meant with any disrespect but its generally...

I've got a MG estate with 280bhp, goes like stink, cost me 10grand to convert, i'd give you that plus 10 grand.

etc etc

Thats a really good idea.
No point searching for p/ex because mainly that will just be dealers.

I have put this on a few of my add's. you all ways get a long stream of things like modified corsa's and astra's. tends to be stuff thats over priced or poorly modified and wont sell, so they try and fob it off on you.

You might worry that is how you would come across, I am now worried that is how I come across frownbiglaugh Although I havent said about an Atom etc, after something more practical

Will have a look on the Swapz site, see what kind of crap I end up being offered!

It would work great if you are replacing second car / toy / not fussy about what you ar after, but I guess if you are changing to meet a requirement it may diminsh the likelyhood (like I am finding)
