Recently got back from Mexico and Route 307 or Mexico 307 that runs from Cancun to Xul-Ha has there equivelant of speed humps every so often.

Does anybody know why, I can understand on smaller roads but on a fast flowing freeway it seems dangerous if anything else. Evrybody uses there hazards on their approach so does actually seem to work though.

The bumps in question or actually solid metal studs see below that you have to crawl over.

I understand the example in the picture is at a junction but alot of them are not and are bang in the middle of a free flowing road with no exits/entrances.

I seem to remember that these are to slow traffic for a crosswalk.

I know the example picture isnt very good but I'm sure some of them are literally in the middle of nowhere with nothing on either side of the road.

Your explantion would make sense though.

I travelled the same road last year, I remember being slowed down for the police check points, maybe the speed bumps are always in place even when the police are not present.I also remember that the speed 'bumps' outside the hotel were in fact the opposite of a bump, as the road was hollowed rather than raised, they were very severe and had to be driven over at virtually a standstill. It certainly slowed the traffic though.

The first few I noticed where at check points and this was my initial thoughts but alot are not and are simply in the middle of nowhere.
